At least one of my zv5000z's fans are on all the time and it is rather annoying. Only one fan is constantly on and the other will turn on when it heats up, but on my last HP notebook the fans would turn completely off when it was just sitting idle. Does anyone know if this is normal operation for the zv5000z or is it time for an exchange? Thanks.

I have the same model HP and usually one fan is on, but I can hardly hear it. My HP is quieter than my wife's Dell 8600.

It's normal. Yeah, I wish there was a way to tell it to shut the fan off below a given temperature too. I don't see where it's necessary to always run a fan when PowerNOW! is enabled.

On the bright side I've never had the notebook overheat on me.

Can either of you get a reading of the fan speed or CPU temperature from any of the utilities available online? I can only get my hard drive temperature. Also, has anyone tried a BIOS flash?

I use mobmeter and as I type this it gives a cpu temperature of 36.0 (c) and hard drive temperature of 35.0, sometimes 36.0 (c).

Here is a link to mobmeter
    http://dssc3031.ece.cmu.edu/~tamaru/mobilemeter/mobilemeterreadme-e.htm

I notice that the CPU frequency changes from 800MHz to 1800MHz, depending on what's going on.

I was told my HP Tech support that the fans were supposed to turn on when the CPU temp reaches 50 celcius and turn off when it drops below 45, however they were not clear about one or both fans turning off or on. Does this notebook support ACPI power settings and if so, how can they be changed?

I think second fan turns on once Temperatur reaches 50C. First fan always on, kinda annoyoing.
