Yesterday I realized that the battery on my zv5000z is empty. Upon inspection I was shocked to see that the PSU's light is off and it is DEAD. I heard a few stories about bad HP PSU's recently, so I was prepared for the worst - 2 weeks of wait plus PSU cost.

I decided to look inside the PSU. What I have found was quite unimpressive. Bad soldering. One pin from a transformer was slightly detached from the soldering alloy (hardly noticeable). There was a layer of some black stuff around the leg (1/2 inch in diameter) that presumably accumulated during months of work when there were random sparks around the bad connection. Had to clean and re-solder, and voila - fixed.

I'm happy the PSU stopped working before frying my MB and made me check the inside.

Hp needs a better QC with their PSU.

BTW: I had a CRT monitor die the very same day at my workplace, but this is a different story [ ;)]
