Just curious if any one has been playing HALO on their notebooks. I play it on lower resolution and single player works fine, but when I play online it lags BIG TIME. I know HP gave us crapy video card, but is there anything can be done?
Thanks

Overclock the video card? I was able to OC from the stock 190/400 to 250/500. If you see video artifacts (glitches), you're pushing your GPU too far. Set HKLMSoftwareNVIDIA CorporationGlobalNVTweakCoolBits to 3 (REG_DWORD) in the registry (regedit.exe) to enable the GPU clock settings page.
I recommend undervolting the CPU with ClockGen for nForce3 if you're going to overclock the GPU, just to keep the overall thermal load down. Full CPU speed at 1.3V core should work. You'll need to disable PowerNOW! (set your Power Scheme to "Always On"). 1GHz at 0.85V usually works for when you want a power-efficient mode.Last edited by a moderator: May 5, 2015 -
Can you explain how to OC GPU? I ran regedit.exe, and did exactly as you said, except I couldn't find any CoolBits to 3 (REG_DWORD)in NVTweak, there are three REG Dwords.
Thanks again for information!!!

You have to add the registry key. Select the NVTweak folder then in the right-hand pane, right-click, New, DWORD Value to add the key. Once you've done that, go to the GeForce 440 Go tab in the Advanced video properties settings and you'll see the Clock Frequencies page.

Ypu can also try upgrading your video drivers to the very latest from nVidia, instead of using the several months-old build from HP. Here are the instructions:
-go to www.nvidia.com and grab the latest XP GeForce drivers.
-Unpack the drivers to a folder (done when you run the setup program) It will create something like C:NVIDIAWin2KXP66.93 (you can then exit the setup prog or let it install/reboot your pc, doesn't matter)
-Go to device manager and right click on the display adapter and select update driver
-Select install from specific location
-Select Don't search, I will choose the driver to install
-Click Have disk
-Browse to NVIDIAWin2KXP66.93 and click OK
-Choose nVidia GeForce4 MX Integrated GPU and Next
-Let it install the driver (may need to click continue anyway)
-reboot and you are good to go!
You can do the same exact thing with the nVidia nForce audio driver (which is much better than that AD Soundmax driver for gaming and directx). If you want I can post instructions for that method as well...

Thanks guys!!!
mmgibso-can you post instructions for audio drivers too

brianstretch--what frequency do I set Core clock and Memory clock?

You'll have to experiment. This is a bit dangerous, so try, say, 220/460 and see if that's enough of a boost. Boosting the memory clock is more important than boosting the core clock at higher resolutions.

To upgrade the zv5000z's OEM Soundmax audio drivers with the latest nForce audio drivers:
-go to www.nvidia.com download sectoin and get Platform/nForce -> Unified Driver -> Windows XP drivers.
-run the setup program - It will create something like C:NVIDIA
ForceWin2KXP5.10.
-Go through the setup program and leave everything checked except for the Ethernet drivers. let it install (may need to click "yes/continue anyway" a few times) and let it reboot your pc
-Now go to device manager and right click on the "SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio" and select update driver
-Select install from specific location
-Select Don't search, I will choose the driver to install
-Click Have disk
-Browse to NVIDIA
ForceWin2KXP5.10AudioDrv and click OK
-Choose "nVidia nForce MCP Audio Processing Unit" and Next
-Click "Yes"
-Let it install the driver and click Finish
-reboot and you are good to go!
This driver has a very slick nvmixer tray application. And for Directx, it should do much better with Halo, since the nForce audio is the same hardware that the xbox uses (which Halo is ported from) -

I installed the nVidia sound drivers, and now when I plug my headphones in the notebook speakers don't turn off?
Also, after installing the current nVidia video drivers, Aquamark is all glitchy.
mmgibso, are you seeing these problems with the newer drivers? -

Hmm....lol
. How can I install original drivers back? After installing new drivers from nVidia, I can't play multiplayer HALO, I get dark screane, but sound work fine.

Sorry guys - hope you've got everything straightened out. You ought to be able to right click on the item in device manager and select properties, then click the roll back button on the driver tab to get back to HP's OEM drivers.
The only game I've played on my zv5000z is Battlefield Vietnam and it works flawlessly with nVidia sound and video drivers. Well, except for the 4 Go 440 chip being a weak GPU in general... I discovered the driver upgrade trick when getting things going under WinXP 64-bit and tried the same method under regular WinXP and it worked, so I thought I'd pass that along. Nvidia always makes rock solid drivers, but I guess there is a reason they won't support OEM builds by default... Sorry again for any pain I might have caused.
