I was looking at Microsoft website and they offered trial version of the Windows XP 64-Bit Edition. Did anyone try to use it on your HP Notebooks? How did it perform on zv5000z? What will be the price of this software once its on the market, does anyone know?

    Thanks

I loaded XP64 on zv5255us. It seemed fairly snappy, but it's hard to compare as I have been unable to get the Nvidia drivers to "take". I d/l these:
Platform drivers (sound, ide, etc): nForce_4.34a_WinXP64
    Video drivers:
    57.30_winxp64-en
    61.76_winxp64-en

The first set loaded ok, and appear to work, as sound started working during installation; also, there is an entry in "Remove Programs" of windows.

But the video drivers: the install program completed without error, but on reboot, no new pages in Display setup cpl.applet, and only the resolutions originally present in the default "Standard VGA Adapter" are present. I must be missing something here, but they don't appear to be installed, no new entry in Remove programs, no tray icons, and no property pages or devices....

The operative thing here is that the display is flat and wide and refresh rate is slow, so that I get a headache working in 64XP. I won't be doing any speed testing or comparison till I get the driver issue resolved.

Also, haven't found any drivers yet for the wifi (Broadcom 54g) adapter
(builtin); the Realtek chip onboard was detected, and I have 10/100 ethernet working fine.

    HTH,

Man, that really blows about the driver problems. I have my copy of XP64 already but I havn't ordered my notebook yet. I figured that using the windows update feature would clear up all errors by now (As i've had the XP64 disc for well over 2 months now. I just couldn't tolerate the refresh rate problems at all, so I guess it's best that I don't install it untill this has been resolved.

Then again, you always have to manually raise your refresh rate back up after installing any video card...

I'm unable to have it detect the video card as anything but Unknown device and Standard VGA. I haven't tried removing it in a regular boot or in safe mode, if that's even available in xp64, but usually there is some sign of the drivers after running the install (and maybe rebooting)

I've read in some newsgroups that windows update isn't activated yet for 64 bit betas -- XP and 2003 server.... Haven't tried it yet tho. Wouldn't expect newer drivers from MS than those issued by Nvidia (beta) yet anywayz, at least until a later RC stage in devel.

Good luck, I think it's worth a try to load XP64 and / or W2k3 betas; lots of people seem to have had success. They're free. There's a lot of potential, too. Apparently though, several Linux distros are fairly mature for x86 at this point, and if neither ms product can be resolved soon, I'll head onward (and upward [ :D])

The Windows drivers that nVidia provides on their website (32-bit and 64-bit) don't support their mobile GPUs. Broadcom hasn't released 64-bit wireless drivers yet AFAIK either. So, I'd reserve the 64-bit Windows betas for desktop PCs for now.

64-bit Fedora Core 2 Linux, OTOH, works great, including nVidia's 64-bit drivers (I tested 64-bit UT2004). The only thing that doesn't work is the Broadcom wireless card due to Broadcom being run by Linux-hostile idiots. And you can't replace the miniPCI wireless card because HP has locked out non-HP cards (I tried, they swear the FCC made them do it but even Dell doesn't pull this stunt). But other than that, everything I tried works.

I have the latest nVidia 64-bit video drivers wirking great on my zv5000z. Here's what you need to do: (this method will work with the latest regular nVidia drivers under XP 32-bit as well)
-Unpack the drivers to a folder (done when you run the setup program) It will create something like NVIDIAWinAMD6461.76 (you can then exit the setup prog or let it install/reboot your pc, doesn't matter)
-Go to device manager and right click on the VGA device and select update driver
    -Select install from specific location
-Select Don't search, I will choose the driver to install
    -Click Have disk
-Browse to NVIDIAWinAMD6461.76 and click OK
-Choose nVidia GeForce4 MX Integrated GPU and Next
-Let it install the driver (may need to click continue anyway)
-reboot and you are good to go! [ :D]
