can someone offer up any help. check out this story..
I went milling around at some local pawnshops to find item to ebay today. i saw this laptop and sure enough i said the deal was too good to be true. i came home and found your site, after checking out this beast i decided to buy it for myself. the tag on it said 899$ but reduced to 700$.. again, too good, something is wrong, sure enough as i check the unit the dvd burner was badm the metal around the eye was pushed way in. the manger (typical south florida greesy type...<< shudders>>) told me to take it as is, i said, no, how about 600$ out the door, tax and all. he said fine. this unit is sweet, way better than my dv1000 i got rid of last monnth. not selling this one but i need the burner repaced. any help would really make my day. thanks

    Hmm....
That's going to need a major overhaul and will almost total the notebook ($400-$500) :( The Drive in that notebook is fixed, so you'll have to get a replacement if you want to still fix it. If you DIY, it might a little bit cheaper since you'll be doing all the labor (around $350), but you'll have to find the replacement part (look at local PC shops and look at HPs replacement parts online), and figure a way on how to replace the drive.

Any standard notebook drive would work - check Newegg.com, they have some nice slim drives, especially the NEC's.

    I had a zv5000z, and I upgraded the drive just fine. ;)

EDIT: It's an easy upgrade - just remove the two screws on the bottom of the optical drive, and the drive will slide out. Put the new one in, replace the screws, and you're good to go.

The NEC 6650 on NewEgg offers excellent burn quality.
