After looking for months, I finally decided that I'd like to get this as my first laptop purchase and it has now come in my price range in the basic model.

Please excuse me if this is an obvious answer, but I couldn't find it anywhere. If I'm only getting the 256MB of ram, would that already be in what I've heard referred to as the "accessible" slot or the more inaccessible slot? Or put another way, am I going to be able to put the upgrade in without concern or would it require taking the computer apart?

Also, is there any thought or news out there about an upgrade to the video card on this model?

    Thanks

The factory-installed memory is always in the "inaccessable" slot, which isn't terribly difficult to get to (it's under the keyboard). I swapped in a pair of Crucial 512MB PC2700 SODIMMs. PC3200 should work but there's been one recent report that it didn't (HP uses PC2700) so... tough call. If you're leaving the existing stick alone then installing a second PC3200 stick will work since it'll run at PC2700. Crucial is still my favorite RAM brand. Run MemTest86+ afterwards for half an hour to verify the new configuration.

The video card is soldered to the motherboard. Yeah, I don't know what HP was thinking either.

This model came out in March, so I'd expect new models around March of 2005. I wouldn't expect any modifications to the zv5000z/R3000z line other than new optical/HD/replaceable components, if that.
