I received my HP zv5000z about a three weeks ago and very pleased with it. I have XP Pro with SP2 installed. I updated the hard drive and did a clean install with the XP-Pro SP2 disk.
I just noticed that it will not record sound through the built in microphone. I never checked it before. The zv5000 does have a built in microphone doesn't it? The audio play back and speakers work great. I have checked the device driver's in control panel and everything seems OK. I have used the built in wizard to test the microphone, that runs OK except it ends telling me it can not make a recording.
A friend with a Gateway & same OS has the same problem after installing the SP2 update. Before installing SP2 the microphone worked fine, after installing it no longer works. I am wondering if SP2 changes something, but I can't imagine what that would be.
Thanks in advance for any suggesting.

There is no built-in microphone. There is a microphone jack next to the headphone jack, which I've tested successfully with my Altec-Lansing headset (recommended, btw, the high-end model at least).

Thank you brianstretch, I guess that answer's the question. I have a microphone from my old desktop I can use if needed. I was going to strip it down anyway.
