    Hello all,

Yesterday I bought a new zv5220us, which is doing just fine, except it won't find my belkin router. No network shows up. Thought I'd run it by here just in case it's something easy that I've missed. I have pressed the wireless function button, and it is lit up.

    Thanks

    Richard

Did you configure the router & wireless card in your notebook? To use wireless, it must be configured properly. If it's not finding any networks, it means that it's not setup or not setup correctly.

You may want to try taking a look at this link, it should help you setup your wireless network.

Guess I was thinking it would automatically find the network since a previous SMC pcmcia card adapter did so without any configuring. What about accessing free "coffee shop" networks. Can't I just walk in and connect without preconfiguring?

You might be able to access your home network without configuring anything on your notebook, but your router must be setup at the least. All wireless security (encryption) must be disabled for this to work (I wouldn't recommend it).

Accessing free "hotspots" (free internet) should be easy, just turn on your wireless and it'll connect, but it's because all their security (encryption) has been disabled. Just don't do any banking while at a "hotspot".

I did that. I also took it to the house of a friend of a friend, and it found their network, but it still won't find mine. If my router is running in an unencrypted mode, and the laptop wireless is encrypted buy default, could that explain it? Shouldn't it find the network anyway?

Also, I installed the smc pcmcia wireless card and it works fine - I'm using it now. It is running in its default (easy install) mode, as is the belkin router.

The router is a "b" router, as is my smc card.

The laptop is "g", but shouldn't it still find the "b" router?

The only thing I can think of trying is to flash in the current firmware for your router. You are correct, your notebook should be able to see it. Heck, I can see half a dozen neighbors' networks intermittantly. I have read that Belkin gear is rather unreliable.

I solved it! I found some posts where someone was advised by belkin to switched the router channel to 5. I tried it, and it worked. Do they think we are born knowing this stuff?
