Well, I cannot believe this, but it's true - the backlight on my LCD display went bad this past weekend [xx(]. I shut the system down on Saturday night after working into the wee hours on a project, and when I started it up on Sunday morning, my new 15.4" display did not jump to life the way it has since mid-January, when I purchased it. So it's off to HP Pavilion Service for repair. I can only hope this will be the ony problem I have with this machine. Up until now it has been a dream to own, and I can still use it with an external monitor fine. It's just that my long commute into the City is no longer productive computing time.
FedEx is picking the unit up tomorrow, and the technician I spoke with tells me it may be back in my hands by Monday or Tuesday of next week. I'll keep you all posted as to how this service call goes.
Anyone else experience a similar issue with their HP/Compaq laptops, perchance?[]

What a let down, it sounds like HP is cooperating and will try and get it back fast, but meanwhile you're stuck without a computer and can't be as productive (or be downright unproductive). I've never owned an HP, they haven't been winning awards for service and quality of late though, so let us know how the repair effort goes and if they can redeem the fact the notebook failed you by getting it back into your hands quickly.

Well THAT was fast - got my laptop back today, new backlight has been installed and a 24 hour turn-around time to boot.
The screen is as bright and crisp as ever, and I'm so happy to have it back before the weekend.
I must say, I am impressed with the service and the follow-up by HP service. They sent me email notifications each step of the way and kept the FedEx tracking numbers in their emails for my tracking info.
I must say, a very pleasant surprise indeed! I just hope this is the only time I will have to send this unit out for repair service! -
well sweet, 5 points to HP in the battle of the customer service ratings!
Glad to hear it all came out okay for you.

I have a zv5227wm
Two nights ago, I flipped open my notebook to find that the display was not working... I tapped the little "stick"-type switch at the top of the keyboard (that activates hibernation) and it flashed on.
The next morning I opened up my notebook to find that it was very very dim. I tried tapping the hibernation switch again, and it doesn't bring the display to life.
I assume that the backlight is bad, like you explained. Is that assumption correct?
I have contacted HP and they are sending FedEx to pick up the notebook. Problem is... I won't have a notebook till it is returned.
I hope they are as quick as they were for you! I live in ND.
Their emails were prompt, tele-support was terrible. I told them what I thought was wrong, but they wanted me to restore the whole system after one attempt to uninstall then reinstall the display driver.
did you lose any files on your puter?
