I have been looking for a laptop and saw this one at the local Walmart. I was going to buy it on the spot, but I wanted to check to see what everyone thought before I did.
Specs on it are
AMD Sempron 3200+
512 MB Ram
40 GB Hard Drive
15 inch WXGA Screen
DVD/CD-R Combo drive
Wireless Networking
It also came with a printer and a carrying case.
Total cost $750 for everything...
Plus the guy at walmart said the CPU is upgradeable to an Athlon 4000+...
Any thoughts/concerns?

Check the deals section on the front page. System performance will be mediocre because of the slow hard drive, but you can upgrade it. The zv6000s are a little heavy so it will not be the most mobile. You should note that upgrading you CPU will void the warranty.

So is it worth a spin? All I am going to be using it for is chatting/surfing and maybe typing up papers and using excel. I am not going to be playing games on it or anything like that. I am all gamed out...

Dude for $750 without dealing with rebates and thats what you are going to be using it for then go ahead and buy it! I wonder if it is the 64 bit or 32 bit Sempron.... and I KNOW someone is going to say the Sempron only comes 32bit but it DOES come in a x86_64 version.

Yes, the zv6000 is a bit on the heavier side and is ment to be a desktop replacement notebook, not a very mobile one. I use mine mainly at home and move it around the house, and the occasional visit to a friend's house or the library. Check your local Office Depot, they may have a zv6000 that's much cheaper.

Well for his needs, this computer will be just fine, I'm not sure if he can get a better deal.

The noted OfficeDepot deals are very good if you don't mind dealing with rebates, but who knows when the next one will be. You can get the same laptop on HPShopping.com for the same price, but upgraded to a DVD burner and glossy screen. The nice thing about HPShopping is you can customize it the way you want. I would recommend the 5400RPM hard drive for better system performance and 12 cell battery. The upgrades on HPShopping are probably worth more than the junky printer and bag at Wal-Mark. Plus no tax and 30 day return policy at HPshopping. Are they worth it? I think the offer pretty good value for the money. HP's glossy screens are fairly good and they have decent keyboards. Are they as well built as ThinkPads? No, but you are paying half as much so take your pick. Good Luck.

The thing is I am impatient! I know it sounds bad but its true. I have been looking for almost two weeks and want to get it done with. I have been spending all of my time looking for a laptop...
