So you want to replace the memory in your zx5000 series notebook but are only able to locate and replace the lower memory module... Take a look at the diagram HP has posted on their "Customer Care" site for help replacing the top memory module. You'll find detailed instructions at

    http://h20015.www2.hp.com/content/common/manuals/c00047539/c00047539.pdf

Does someone want to recommend good replacement memory? Brand? Speed? Size? Price? There was some discussion on this forum about whether the installed memory was really PC2700 333Mhz as marked or PC2100 266Mhz. What have you found?

Thats great info. Thanks for posting that. I wanted to upgrade the memory but wasnt to sure on how to take this thing apart. So whats the max memory? 2GB or 1.2GB? I saw on the Crucial.com website that it was 2GB but the jandr.com states 1.2GB. I bought it from jandr, zx5040.

My zx5000 is actually a zx5078cl from CostCo. When I checked at HP it states: "Maximum Memory 1280 MB DDR SDRAM (1 x 256MB, 1 x 1024 MB)." But I still haven't figured out which memory to purchase as a replacement since the installed modules are labeled PC2700 but the replacement parts on HP's website are PC2100. And I haven't convinced myself that I can afford a 1Gb chip to replace one of the 256Mb chips (yet!) - it seems like such waste...

    Hey nlschele1,
    HP's site states the same thing for your zx5040(us?) as it does for my zx5078cl: "Maximum Memory 1280 MB DDR SDRAM (1 x 256MB, 1 x 1024 MB)." What are you thinking? 2 x 512Mb or 1 x 256Mb, 1 x 1024 Mb?

The 1GB sticks are very expensive, 435.99 at Crucial.com. I was thinking of 2X512 which are 117.99 each at crucial.com. For me there wouldnt be too much of a difference between 1GB(2X512) and 1.2GB (1x512+1x256). I much rather save the 200 bucks. I just dont know what Im going to do with the two 256 sticks. Also the sticks they sell on crucial.com are NON-PARITY, which crucial.com claims to be much faster and better that parity. The site also states that Parity Memory and NON parity CANNOT be mixed. Which kills the option of just buying one 512 and placing it on the bottom of the Notebook, IF the notebook comes with parity memory. Well my notebook is in the mail so I'll wait and see how it performs before buying more memory.

You could sell your memory on ebay if you do upgrade it all or you could hold on to it incase your memory ever goes bad. I think I would go with the first option to make some money back. If you do make sure to sell them seperately.
