Hi, lately my screen has been giving me some problems, it shuts off randomly (as though I were pushing that little button to close it) and the only way I can get it back on is pushing that button again. Sometimes it does this a few times a minute but then stops doing it for several hours. I called hp and they told me this was a software issue... anyone have this sort of problem and if so how did you fix it? Thanks in advance for any advice

    system is an hp zx5070us, p4 2.8ghz, 1280 ram, 64meg video

I never had that problem I had an issue where my rubber button screwed up and didn't turn the monitor off when I closed the lid, but I found out it was no longer pushing the button down enough to turn off the monitor.
It seems odd that it is a software issue as you can use the button before the laptop is fully turned on to turn off your monitor.

Do you think that HP tech support was wrong in telling me that it was a software issue? Also to make things worse, I notice that every now and then my screen will flicker very quickly and also my system will freeze randomly... arghhh

    Bunsen,

To verify if it's a software problem, try booting into safe mode. This is a pure basic load by XP and doesn't run any additional software/drivers that might interfere. If the problem also occurs here, it's most likely a hardware problem. But you can completely CYOA (cover your own a**) by re-installing the OS using HP's recovery discs. If the problem still occurs, then you've proven 100% that it's a hardware problem. But only do this as a last step as it will wipe all your data and settings (if you don't back it up).

If the LCD is going out like this, it might be the FL Inverter or LCD Backlight that is at fault. Both issues would require the unit to be sent in for service.

and after my experience with tech support i wouldn't necessarily belive them when they say x causes this, because they are just reading out of a book and only half listening to what you say.

I argued on the phone for 45 minutes telling them that I my motherboard was fine it was just a bad connector on the power port.
