ok, i just got my CTO zx5000 2 days ago and it makes some strange noises coming from the right side. at idle its barely audible unless your in a quiet room and you hold your ear too it....it's like a buzzing sound kinda like radio static as well as a rhytmic tick about as frequent as a heartbeat. The strange thing however is that this noise can also be heard in the powerbrick if you hold it up to your ear (THE EXACT SAME NOISE). Also when i have music playing, the buzz gets louder and more annoying (as does the noise in the powerbrick), but when i do something such as scroll down the page or drag a browser window around (which puts more load on the cpu), the sound gets quieter but as soon as i stop the moving the noise continues. o yeah the noise comes from notebook whether its on AC power or not. I was just wondering if this is normal for zx5000 and what is making that noise? btw this is my first notebook and i REALLY dont wanna have to send it back because i love it (although the brightview screen does have some noticeable light leakage at the bottom but that doesnt really bother me). btw..its a 3.0 ht p4 and has a fujitsu 60gb 5400rpm HDD.

I've noticed something similar but MUCH milder with my zv5000z. It's coming from the speakers (plug in a pair of headphones to verify this). I only notice it when there's no other audio playing, and even then it's infrequent.
If I had to guess I'd say you have a bad powerbrick. They're selling HP power bricks for $30 over here if you have use for a second power brick if I guessed wrong []. I got one, it's the new 135W capable model (more than my zv5000z needs but your less efficent P4 might appreciate it).

it could also be the Fans theres a Vent on the right side of my Zx5280 that is what u could be hearing. the hot Air blows right on the mouse when im using it i hope it doesnt start to melt it lol.

Prophet,
I notice the same sound with my zx5078cl. It does not correspond to the fans and occurs only when my laptop has a heavy processor load. For a while I thought that I was hearing the data move through the processor (I have the Mobile 3.06Ghz), but that only makes sense in sci-fi movies... I've decided to live with it; I've been living with it since March 1.

I must have a bad zx5040, I hear no noise at all, even with the fans running.
No noise from the speakers either. -
yeah i think ill just live with it...its only audible in a very quiet room or if i put my ear to the laptop and....i just checked and my desktop seems to do the exact same thing (but through the speakers) and the powerbrick on my sisters laptop also makes a faint noise (though hers is quieter than mine but thats probably because its about half the size of mine). My parents said they couldnt even hear it and often i hear noises no one else can hear so i guess its just normal.

I've never heard this out of my zx5000 CTO. Processor has been running in HT mode for about 6 hours with steady compiling... mebbe i should listen harder.. i'll let u know when i get home.

either, i'm deaf, your a freak, or there's no sounds coming from the powerbrick that i can hear.

yeah you'd actually have to put your ear to the computer to hear it (or be up at 4 in the morning in dead silence like i was). i think some people (like me) are way more sensitive to noises like this (and other background noise) than others because my parents can hardly hear it at all. So...am i the only one who hears it in my powerbrick too or is it just my super human hearing or the wiring at my house b/c i can hear it in other laptop powerbricks as well.
-
well i guess if your computer doesnt make the noises then the powerbrick wont either because the source of my noise is definitely the laptop itself b/c the brick makes the noise my laptop is making not the other way around (the laptop makes the same noises when on battery too).

Go to the store(or a friend who has a zx5000), listen to one of the other zx5000 notebooks and see if it makes the same noise.
If the store notebook makes the same noise, it is normal.
If not, call us at HP tech support(800-474-6836, when the guy asks you to say your full product name say "connect" then say "home", when you get to the call director ask them to transfer you using "transfer code 250", this will make sure you don't get to india support). When you talk to us, tell the agent about the noise and that you compared it to another ZX5000 and that the other notebook did not make the same noise. At that point we should be able to service the notebook and have that checked out and fixed for you.

i have been trying to work in a quiet room and the noise has started to bug me more. I tried to record it, but the mic tends to pic up the fans, and the sound is very high pitched... you can hear it here <http://www.norxh.us/lap.wav>. I tend to have very sensitive ears. It is contiuously varying and rather annoying, I was just browsing web pages while that recorded. Its the same on/off AC power. I listened at compusa real quick and it was doing it but I could only hear it with my ear right against it, which would be acceptable. Of course there was alot of other noise in the store so its hard to tell. I may go to the store one more time before calling HP. Im worried that if I get an exchange and it does it aswell, then I will be out of my 30 days and will be stuck with it. I more tempted to just return it, I can't afford to play around with $1,500 or get stuck with something I dont like. terribly frustrating because this was such a good deal.
here's another sound running prime95 stress test <http://www.norxh.us/lap2.wav>. The part about 10 sec in I could here from a few feet away. -
omg, thats the EXACT same noise i get...though mine seems a bit quieter but that could just be because of where the mic was. Its seems to be more concentrated on the right side, correct?

I have had a zv5227wm for about 2 months now. Last night I changed the fonts to cleartype and a couple of other settings on the video card and now it makes a high pitched sound similar to yours. It doesn't have the beeping but its a kinda screeching that sounds like data.
