I called HP tech support and explained about my short battery life, he was very nice and said “he will send a replacement battery”. My problems same as before 1) short battery life
    2) temperature gets up to 56-58 C (with normal window works, no DVD, no games) so if I don’t get least 2,5 hours battery life with new replacement battery I will return my zx5000 before 30 days over.
I guess my biggest dilemma is which notebook I ‘ll buy next???

    My current notebook specs:
    HP Pavilion zx5000 (COT)
    - Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 3.00 GHz w/HT Technology
    - 15.4" WXGA BrightView Widescreen(1280x800)
    - 128MB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) 9600
    - 512MB DDR SDRAM (2x256MB)
    - 40 GB 4200 RPM Hard Drive
    - DVD/CD-RW Combo Drive
    - 54g(TM) 802.11b/g WLAN w/ 125HSM/SpeedBooster(TM)
    - Microsoft(R) Works/Money
    - 12 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
    Price was $1423 less $100 rebate = $1323

I’m thinking to buy this notebook, maybe someone can help me about negatives or positives???
    HP Pavilion zv5000z (COT)
    - AMD Athlon(TM) 64 3400+ 2.20 GHz
    - 15.4" WXGA (1280x800)
    - 64MB NVIDIA(R) GeForce(TM) 4 440 Go +1394 & 5-in-1
    - 512MB DDR SDRAM (2x256MB)
    - 30 GB 4200 RPM Hard Drive
    - DVD/CD-RW Combo Drive
    - 54g(TM) 802.11b/g WLAN w/ 125HSM/SpeedBooster(TM)
    - Microsoft(R) Works/Money
    - 12 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
    Price is $1373 less $100 rebate = $1273

I’ll use my notebook for internet, word, XL and some picture editing. No games or other heavy tasks.

    Any advice will be appreciated.

You'll get much better battery life from the zv5000z, 3-4 hours. CPU temp will be around 40C idle. I was able to watch a 3 hour DVD on battery on mine. The CPU is significantly more powerful than the 3GHz P4, plus you get hardware-assisted virus protection with WinXP Service Pack 2. Since you don't need a high-end GPU the zv5000z is a much better fit for you.

Get Bluetooth too if it's not too expensive. Bluetooth wireless mice are surprisingly nice things. Consider swapping in a Hitachi 7200RPM HD, it makes a HUGE difference.

I wouldn't bother looking at these units. I'd start looking at the Pentium M based notebooks. You may pay a bit more, but it'll give you the battery life you're looking for. You may get better battery life in an AMD64 (Low Voltage model only, don't know if this is a LV model CPU in the ZV5000) than you would in a P4, but still doesn't compare to a Pentium M. Anyone who buys a P4 based notebook should never expect good battery life, IMHO.

    Venombite,
before I purchased my zx5000 with P4, I called HP sales and they said battery time is between 2.5 to 3hrs depending your application.
Later in this forum I read from several other people who owns the same notebook they were saying the same things between 2.5 to 3 hrs.
So what is good battery life? I least expect 2.45 to 3hrs.
So if compare apple to apple I'm getting only 2hrs (simple task, internet, email, word, XL no games) that make me wonder???
You are correct I need to find Pent M machine.
Thank you for your in put

    Venombite,
I have a RoadRunner cable with Lan, I lower the screen brightness 4 level, I set the battery power management to Laptop/Portable, I don’t use for heavy tasks, I calibrate the battery so really I think I cover all the bases but still get only 2hrs battery time. HP sending replacement battery I hope will be here soon.
Again thank you for your help

    Avjett,
thank you for Asus and Fujitsu web addresses. I think Asus is very good but expensive for me, Fujitsu is ok but I didn't get a chance to figure out a new unit.
    Thanks

That all depends on what your doing ;) I know that for 3d Rendering (just an example) the P4 beats an A64, and for most other apps that are business related a PentM beats the A64 and the P4. I have never tried a PM, but these are just results from TomsHardware.

As far as your batt life goes, you are using a desktop P4 power hungry beast. I have a zx5000 with P4 3.0HT as well and I when I ordered I had already accepted the fact that this would get an avg of 1.5-2hours batt life for me (3DS Max). It would be nice if they still offered the P4M in the zx5000. As far as the zv5000 goes, IDK I just wouldnt come within a half mile of a Go440. BUT, I don't use my laptop for the same things as you ;)

When I was weighing batt life vs power I was considering the CL56 barebones and then using the PM 725. The barebones have a Radeon 9700 128mb as well. Configured like this with 1gb RAM and a 60gb HDD I was looking at $1,500. However I eventually strayed from it because of lack of support.

I have heard great things about the eMach 6811 and the Acer AS2012WLMi though!
