I just got my X61 last week 4:3 screen. I like it on the road because a 12" 4:3 is larger than a 12" widescreen but still prefer a widescreen at home for watching movies and multi-windowing. I got my 22" LCD monitor for that.

    Hearing this make me

    1400x1050 > 1440x900

I'm gonna go hug my 14.1" T61p after i post this.

    Ooo that really sucks!

If that's the case, I'm not buying Lenovo/IBM any more. Too bad, so sad. There were 2 reasons I always stuck with IBM/Lenovo. Build quality and standard aspect ratio laptops - even if that demanded a higher premium!

I really liked the fact that Thinkpads were in a class of their own and particularly useful/convenient for business users.

Now Lenovo seems to be pandering to the "look-at-me-I've-got-a-widescreen-to-watch-movies-with" fad that's blindly sweeping all other manufacturers.

Let a business laptop remain a business laptop and not turned into a toy!

Am I the only one that prefers a widescreen when using excel/access? I would much rather scroll up and down, than left and right.

On the 14.1" screens, the difference is in the resolution. SXGA+(1400x1050) has more real estate than WXGA+(1440x900), so the 40 pixels across doesn't make much of a difference, considering you lose 150 vertically. For writing lines of code, more vertical space is better. The 14.1" standard screen Tseries in my opinion has been the perfect balance of weight and size. It's pretty unfortunate that it will no longer be an option. I would pay the premium for a standard screen option, but the engineering and testing of creating a standard screen version is probably not worth it for Lenovo.

Its a shame that the 4x3 is no longer available. Although I never really understood the one is better than the other argument. Widescreens are simply different. I enjoyed having the choice between the two and choosing the best one for me.

I still hope they will release 1680x1050 on 14'1. This is the same DPI, isn't it?

A widescreen only comes in use with in-depth Excel sheets with many columns and with programming for me. Other than that it's worthless in my life. I would far prefer a 4:3.

Shame, really. Wish there was a way to implant my old R51 screen onto my yet-to-be-shipped T61.

This has nothing to do with Lenovo pandering the look at me I've got a widescreen to watch movies with fad. It has to do with cost. As I'm sure you know that Lenovo does not manufacture their own screens but rather purchase them from ODMs such as Samsung, LG...etc. When the screen manufacturers stop producing 4:3 screens or make it extremely cost prohibitive to do so it leaves computer companies little to no choice. Manufacturers are going to produce what the current trend is, and whether you like it or not, consumers want wide screen, at least on laptops.

A widescreen isn't a toy, its just different. Just because its of no use to you, doesn't mean its of no use to the millions of other people who prefer it.

Bad news for all who prefer 4:3 aspect ratio screens. Panasonic offers 4:3 screens on their current T,W and Y series. If they do the Montevina refresh and keep the 4:3 aspect ratio screens, I think that they will attract some of the Thinkpad crowd.

On the other hand, this is probably good news for all Thinkpad 4:3 screen owners. Me thinks the second hand value of our computers just went up a notch ;-).

I hope that Lenovo keeps the matte screen types when they go widescreen. If they move from matte 4:3 to glossy 16:10, I will unfortunately not buy another Thinkpad.

I think outrigger has the issue nailed... it is not Lenovo's choice per se, but the panel makers.

I've been choosing the widescreen models because I do a lot of work in Excel... but 4:3 would seem to have an advantage for writers, or coders.

If you find you want more vertical space, and are stuck with widescreen, there are options to optimize screen real estate - like putting the taskbar on the side... my desktop has been arranged that way for years.

Of course, although I love office 2007, I do wish there were an option to relocate the ribbon to the side - that would be my preferred arrangement in Word.

I know what you mean. Since my screen is 12", I ended choosing to minimize the ribbon and instead I swarming the Quick Access Toolbar with the commands I most often use. Works pretty well for me, I free up extra screen real estate and only occasionally need to use the tabs.
