I had the older Samsung SSD (that came pre-installed with X200) and I just took the deal from NewEgg and bought 128GB 830 series.

I remember reading something about changing setting in the BIOS at first to make SSD faster(?)..

What should I do before installing a fresh copy of Windows 7 (or is it worth to go to Windows 8 Consumer Preview)?

I need to have Visual Studio, some CS programs and biology programs run for sure though..

    Thanks!

You'll want AHCI mode, it's highly preferred for optimal SSD performance. Just go into BIOS and make sure SATA operation is set for AHCI.

    Thank you!

So just press F2 (or whatever the button was to get into BIOS) and change to AHCI?

That's all I need to do before I fresh install a copy of Windows 7 via External DVD-Drive?

Yes, that is all you need. Alternatively you can put Windows 7 onto a flash drive and install it like that. All you need is a 7 ISO and a 4 GB flash drive. Installs much faster too.

You mean just copy and paste the ISO file directly to E:/ (if my flash drive is E :)..?

Do I need to change the BIOS to read Flash Drive first?

Just plug-in and reboot - and it will install?? Thanks!

TRIM depends on whether the SSD supports it. In this case the Samsung 830 does and it will automatically be enabled as long you run it in AHCI mode under Windows 7.

I received the SSD. Going to fresh install Windows 8.

But how do I enable AHCI after I plug in the new SSD?

    Hi,

In principle you don't need any adapter. I used ~1-2mm thick piece of cardboard (I cut the piece from the packaging of my old SSD :D ) to make the combination thickness the same as about the 9mm hard drive -- it fit really nicely into the mounting bracket. :)

    I'm not that neat... :)

Anyway, this seller accepted my offer for $5.00 if anyone is interested. I didn't wanted to order from NY since it's quite far from where I live.

Hm. What you linked is (or looks to me like) the regular HD caddy that has the 9mm thickness. I think if you mount the 7.5mm HD into this, you will still have some room and the rubber parts won't fit properly. But maybe I am not quite getting what you asked. :)

Really..? Which one should I buy then? Could you recommend me one on eBay?

    This is really complicated

OK, I am not aware that there is a 7mm caddy for X200. But you don't need it!

Here's how I sorted it out. I took out the old hard drive (it was a 9.5mm drive) out of the HD caddy from my X200T (it's the same one in X200; I had that one too).

I screwed the Samsung drive (7mm) in the metal holders and I just put 2 pieces of cardboard on top of it (which is together just slightly less than 9.5mm) into 9.5mm caddy:

Otherwise, the rubber padding will just sort of hang loose. If you stick the cardboard it works perfect. I just put enough so that nothing was loose. Here's how it looks in the front:

If you have the hd caddy (you had to have it since the original hard drive was in it), just put something to make the SSD+something 9mm thick. :) It's nice because you can just move the cardboard away if later you switch to 9mm drive. It took me literally few minutes to find and cut the cardboard. Let me know if you're still stuck. :)

Wow, thank you so much for the pictures. That helps a lot!!

My current SSD is 1.8" and has a small adapter compared to traditional 2.5" caddy. So it wouldn't fit. I don't have any 2.5" caddy.

But the one I ordered would work..? Because I already placed an order early in the morning...

    Oh OK it's a 1.8" disk! Yeah, that's a completely different beast! :)

Yes, I think what you ordered is exactly what you need (and what I have on photos) -- I can't see any difference. It's a HD caddy for 2.5" drives, that are 9.5mm thick. Samsung 830 is also 2.5" but 7mm thick. The rubber padding has a 9.5mm space inside so just stuff it in like I did once you get the caddy. :p
