Anyone know if this drive is supposed to burn Double Layer DVDs?

    Because I just can't burn a Memorex DVD+R DL... :(

Yes they can. Sounds like a media issue. Who is the manufacture of your drive?

    HL-DT-ST.

Could it be that to burn DVD+R DL, a special program is needed? I've tried using PowerISO and the Windows Burn facility (drag & drop).

What's your OS? Verbatims are generally considered to be the best DL discs.

Maybe it doesn't support + media and you need DVD-R DL?

    I'm using Vista Ultimate x64.
I can't believe tat Memorex is the problem... I mean, they're not that bad...
And the specification of the recorder allows DVD+R DL...

Has anyone ever burned a DVD+R DL with their ultrabay recorder?

I am running Vista Ultimate x64 SP1, and I have burned many DL discs with my T61p. I have even used Memorex media before. I use the latest version of Nero, and I never have any issues.

Media quality often varies greatly. Memorex is not a top brand.

I've had a dual-layer burner since they first were release. I've probably burned less than 10 dual-layer discs total in that time.

Check this post I've found in Thinkpads.com (my burner has the same FRU as the broken one):

I may have to go to Lenovo to solve this. :(

So, I bought a Verbatim DVD+R DL just to be sure it wasn't Memorex's fault... Guess what. The Verbatim DVD worked without any problem!!
And, today, messing with my old DVDs, I found that I had previously burned two Datawrite DVD+R DL DVDs... I totally forgot.

It seems it was Memorex's fault... I remember that when I bought the Memorexs, they had two packs of DVD+R DL, each with different colors. Don't know if that has anthing to do with it.

Anyway, I'm trying to burn another Memorex just to be sure...

Edit: Yep, this time the Memorex was correctly burned. Weird. I didn't change anything... It seems to be awfully slow though...

I can copy a dvd in about 20 minutes on my old toshiba P200 laptop, but it takes an hour or so on my new N300 lenovo with much better configuration? I am wondering why? Please help.

Remember to keep your drive firmware updating through Lenovo's Driver Matrix, new firmware ensure more brands and specifications of DVD recordable media is compatible with the burners provided for Thinkpads.

there is a setting in the BIOS about how the CD/DVD drive should work, i.e. Quiet, Normal, and Fast.

the default is .. well Normal, lol.
