    Hi,

I just received a brand new t61p this week and I have to say that I'm rather disappointed. I thought that money could buy performance and quality, but my expectations are clearly not met.

First of all, hibernation does not work, which is a huge drawback for me.. as I consider this one of the most important features of a notebook.

More annoying to me is yet another issue that I noticed after using it a couple of days. There is a vibration noise coming somewhere from the right side of the thinkpad. It is not the DVD drive, thats for sure.

The noise is very subtle yet clearly there. It sounds like a distant vibration alarm of a cell phone, so rather low pitch. 1 second vibration, 1/2 second off. Also, the vibration noise seems to fade in and out. It is hearable even with another notebook right next to it that has its fans on.

I cannot for sure tell where it's coming from, but if I lift the the right side up, it is not hearable so I guess it must come from some fan in the right half of the machine.

The notebook is sitting on a regular wooden desk, like the ones you might find in a swedish furniture store.

    Does anybody else experience this?

I read in this forum about pulsating noises on older T4x machines, but I was not sure if it is the same fan issue.

    Thanks,

    Jo

I think the vibration is your disk. Please use the device manager to ascertain the manufacturer. Seagates are noisy.

Please say more about how hibernate doesn't work. I have a t61p with Ultimate and hibernate works splendidly.

If you have no disc in the driver it should not vibrate.

It is a Hitachi 200GB disk.

I think this can't be normal, because it is not some high-pitch noise that only kids can hear, but a deeper vibrating sound. It is very annoying when you're in a rather quiet environment.

Is it the DVD/CD or the HDD. HDD should not make noise (except slight). If you get a wobble vibration its not mounted in the case correctly. Call tech support at Lenovo to get an RMA or service ticket opened.

I agree with BaldwinHillsTrojan, get an RMA. We have 5 of the 200GB Hitachis and none of them make any noticeable noise as you described.

Also, with the hibernation... one word: Vista. Try *upgrading* to XP. ;) haha

    Ok, thanks for your feedback!

I will talk to the shop where I bought it. Maybe the can fix it right there..

As for the hibernation issue, I will open another thread.

I think the HDD was not mounted properly inside the case structure. Probably nothing wrong with the HDD itself. However, if you bought a BMW and the engine was not mounted properly onto the engine bay, you would be peeved. I suggest you not be upset at the retailer but take it to Lenovo. If you didn't unbox the notebook yourself in sealed plastic, it's quite possible the shop did a parts switch on you.
