I have owned my thinkpad t61 for nearly 1 year. Recently the fan is developing a loud sound like never before. Especially when it's on full speed.

The loudness is like the sound of an old chassis fan when the gear of the fan become sloppy and the fan is wobbling when rotating. Creating a humming sound "trrrrr...".

    Does anyone have simmilar problem?
Is there anything i could do myself to fix the fan?

    Thanks before.

    Hi
If I were you I would use something to monitor the temps like HWmontor and then if it's high start cleaning the fan as per Gophn's guide.

You may want to look into replacing the fan. Its bearings may be shot.

Does anyone have instructions on how to replace the fan in the T61? Is it as simple as just removing the palm rest and keyboard and popping it out? Also, does the fan separate from the heatsink, or do I have to remove them together?

i had the same problem few weeks ago. i think your fan is going to break.
i intesively (and nonstop) used cpu for a lot of time, then fan started occasionally to make noise. when fan were noisy no air went out from notebook. i called assistance (3 year guarantee ;) ) and they replaced the fan.

If you fix these things yourself, like replacing fans or other simple fixes, does it void the warranty?

so said the technician. however i don't know if it's possible to see the "replacement not permitted".
but the question is: why shouldn't you take advantage of guarantee?

If it's not a mechanical structural problem, it's probably dust and/or hair that's got stuck and wound up and tangled with the fan. Open up the keyboard and use a can or compressed inert air and give it a few blows. Then, if there's hair, just pull them out.
