I cloned everything from the 1TB HDD to my SSD with a program called "paragon device manager" and it said my SSD should be working now and gave me instructions on how to boot from it. I tried, but to my dismay it doesn't work. Any ideas?

Did you try selecting it as the boot device using that recessed button near where you connect the ac adapter?

Does it show up as a choice in the boot manager?

I use that little button to temporarily select a different boot device. That way I can test different drives without permanently changing the boot drive.

If it doesn't work, have you tried setting legacy to active and setting legacy to boot first?

    Cheers,

When you boot into the bios and arrow over to the boot menu on the far top right of the screen, the first item on the menu is Boot Mode and it defaults to UEFI. You can change it to Legacy Support,

If you select Legacy Support the second item (Boot Priority) changes to legacy first

It then list all the EFI and Legacy devices you can boot.

Does the SC2 M2 SSD show up as a Windows Boot Manager option under EFI or under Legacy?

    Cheers,

tried, didn't work. Kept going to a black screen when trying to boot and said "no device to boot from" or something like that. I even clicked f12 to change the boot options to my normal, internal HDD and it didn't start. The SSD is also called
EFI USB BOOT (Samsung SSD 830) in bios and its over my internal HDD

Ok, I assumed you added a M.2 SSD not a std 2.5" SSD. That should work perfectly if cloned correctly. I have several Samsung 840 SSD drives and they work fine in the y510p. I use Acronis to clone my drives and only the last 2 versions created Windows 8 boot capable clones. I've never heard of this Paragon program.

Also you said it shows up over the internal HDD. How did you add the SSD? In some caddy in the optical drive bay?

I've read booting is not supported from the optical bay. Have you tried putting the SSD in the std internal drive bay thereby replacing the OEM 1TB HDD? If not, I'd try that first. If it boots correctly at least you know the clone was successful and you can put the HDD in the optical bay.

    Cheers,

my SSD is 2.5" 256gb samsung 830. I tried to boot it via USB, i don't want to open my laptop to replace it and then when it doesn't work i'll have to reopen it. It happened to me on a previous computer.

I doubt you'll get that to work. Opening it up and installing it and just putting the bottom cover back on w/o putting the screws back in is not a problem.

There are people who say they've gotten Windows 8 to boot from USB but I've never seen that work. Best to quit fighting that and swap the drives if you want to be sure.

    Cheers,
