Which one would you get? Take everything into consideration: price, performance, features, design, build quality, etc.

This should be interesting.

Awesome laptops Notebook Evangelist
Its looks pretty cool

I'd wait for the price of the X300 to dip a bit. Quite frankly the SSD premium adds so much to the price but i do love it though. Definitely would choose it over the HypeMachine Macbook air.
-
The overall footprint of the X300 is larger than the X61s, but I think more screen real estate and its thinness makes up for it.
-
If their respective prices were within 10% of each other I'd snag an x300. however, at their current prices, the x61/s wins hands down in my book. To me its like putting a 4 cylinder turbocharged engine in a Bentley as opposed to a beefy v8. It needs more power to justify the price difference. I do crave that full size enter + backspace key of the x300.
-
If the X300 lacks any kind of dock, then I'd go for the X61. Small screens are fine for when I'm on the go, but when I'm at a desk, I would either need a laptop with a high resolution screen or just get an external monitor; and in the latter case, a dock would be great since everything plugs into the dock instead of the laptop.

x61 cause it's cheaper

Seems like the replies and the poll results don't match. C'mon, let us know why you voted for the X300!
-
For $3000, I could get a lot more for my money. Such as two Thinkpad T61's lol -
The price is a disappointment, but I keep in mind that ThinkPads used to be pricey anyways. Lenovo is reverting back to their premium prices, which is understandable; not all notebook computers are made for the mainstream. -
SpacemanSpiff Everything in Moderation
If I had to buy now, I would go with an X61.
It is hard not to be impressed with the X300. The concept has a great future. But, the first generation X300 is too expensive, has too slow a processor, too small storage space, and only has the existing (GMA X3100) integrated graphics. -
Blasphemous thought I know, but ... I wish glossy screen was an option on all Thinkpads. -
I voted for the x61s, but to be fair I already own one. This is the best laptop I have ever owned, and my Mac Book Pro has been collecting dust since the day I got it.
As for the X300, I would say given I was about to buy a laptop, I would still go with an x61s, mainly for the smaller price and smaller footprint. I also don't like having a touchpad on the palmrest, I'm a total trackpoint convert. The 1400x900 resolution on a 13" screen sounds great! One of my coworkers bought an x61 tablet with 1400x1050 resolution and just about every one in the office couldn't get over how great it looked.
SSD is an amazing technology, but it's still too pricy for the common man. That said, I hope they offer it as an option for the x61 (if they haven't already). If the 64gb SSD's come down between 200-300$ i'd gladly hop on one to save some battery life. -
Why X300?: higher res screen + DVD drive
-
Oh yeah. Forgot about the 1024x768 limit on the X61s. I'm using a 1440x1050 T60-14inch. I have to use 120dpi large fonts option in Windows.
- pro: more workspace, sharper and smoother fonts
- con: "large fonts" option which makes some windows look disproportional and negates some of the extra workspace. Also, I have to use 120% magnification in Opera, but images don't scale perfectly.
-
Not really blasphemous.....an option would be nice. Matte would still be the standard, it's just an option.
-
Neither of these 2. Both would either demonstrate incompleteness in feature(s) such as lacking in touchpad, lacking in built-in optical drive, lacking in port-replicator, lacking in media-card slots, etc.
If I really need ultra-portables, I will choose from machines with complete features such as Sony VAIO TZ, Toshiba R500, Panasonic Toughbook. Price is not my critical consideration.
(Of course, individuals' needs differ.)

The X300 is not meant to compete with the X61/s. They are aimed at completely different crowds. This is most obvious when you consider the footprint of the X300 - I believe it is actually closer in footprint to the 14" T61 than it is to the X61/s.
Notice that the X61/s will be sold alongside the X300. The X300 is not a replacement x-series.
That said, the comparisons are natural since the X61/s is the closest thing in Lenovo's lineup to the X300.
The X200 will apparently be the replacement for the X61/s and will be a much closer comparison. -
Can't argue with the Toshiba R500 or Panasonic W7. I love both of them.
