I think (actually, I am just guessing) this has something to do with the integrated graphics card. I say so based on my experience with my R400. But in my case, this usually happens when booting up. By the time the booting up is over and done with, the Power Manager icon reverts back to normal. Clearly, in the OP's case, since clicking on the icon opens up the app, it would appear that there is nothing wrong with PM. I don't know the solution to this. Perhaps reinstall the graphics drivers?

I don't think so. But to be sure, you could go into Power Manager and check on battery health. I am pretty sure this is a graphics-driver related problem - though I have not bothered to check this for myself.
I don't see this problem in my x201, but then that has both the Intel HD and the latest drivers etc. (as of last night, that is). -
yes i tried the lastest driver,,,,and then reboot my machine==> the error is still there...
-
Try to boot your machine without the battery, see what happens, and then boot with the battery installed.
-
Wait what? That looks like your battery is not installed. Try pulling out the battery and plugging it back in. Try unplugging the AC power. It may be a faulty battery or charging circuitry.

I think it is a software problem. I see no indications that the battery in my R400 is faulty. Used yes (after all, I have had it for around a year or so), but faulty no. -
Like others, I get that icon briefly at startup. It goes away quick after everything is loaded. In your case, I also think it's a driver issue, though I have my doubts it's the display driver. Try to reinstall all the power manager related drivers and see if it fixes it. Even better, try to reinstall all the ThinkVantage drivers, in particular the chipset driver.

Well that's why he should try to pull the battery out and plug it back in and also try to run the computer off battery power to see if the software can go back to normal.
