Do I really need to change from 9300 to 9600 and from wifi 5100 to 5300? I really feel uncertain...240 dollars are a large number for me, but on the other hand I don't want to lose good feature if they're important..
-
oh...I found my problem is actually the same as yuzi's...I understand now. I'll call to make a change in 5300 tomorrow.
-
Not worth to go to 9600 imo, but you should definitely do the 5300 upgrade if you're planning to get the 5100.
-
I agree with stewie but i also think you should get home premium as well.
-
Yeah good catch, at least get Home Premium.
-
what would be the difference b/w home basic and premium?
-

The Basic really has no feature. -
Oh..I'll make a call today. I feel that I can get a vista utimate dvd iso after I got the laptop, so I'll try to burn a disk and use the serial number I got to install vista ultimate 64 and make an upgrade.
Thanks for all your replies! -
Does this actually work?

So that's my final order now. It should arrived in 9/5.
And, I've called Lenovo's sell's team, they told me I can reinstall myself. So I don't think I should worry. -
good luck with your new machine, looks like a nice roll call.

Do you have a retail copy of Vista Ultimate x64 with it's own key? If you don't and plan on using your key that came with the laptop to do the upgrade, you can't do this unless you bought some version of Vista Ultimate. It won't work. You can only use the key that came with the laptop with the version of Vista you bought from Lenovo. For example if you buy Vista Home premium 32 you can go to Vista Home Premium 64, but can't go to Vista Ultimate 64.
As far as your config, it looks good. All the advice I can give you is to go for the best CPU and Wifi you can afford, can't go wrong with that, money well spent in my opinion as far as upgrades go. -
I don't have a retail copy of Vista Ultimate 64. I just have one 32 Chinese version(ISO file) from internet, which doesn't include the crack software. So I might have to try several times to get a functioning OS and get a 64 one instead.

Hi! I want to ask if it worth me to buy the turbo card. I don't mean the price, but it's listed in lenovo that if I choose it then I won't have UWNP or something like a wireless card. I'm quite confused, does anyone know anything about this problem?
-
From what I understood by reading the T400 Hardware Maintenance Manual, the slot where the turbo memory card goes can be used for a wireless USB card that I think is not available quite yet. So you could have one or the other but not both.
If you do a Google search for "turbo memory" you'll find a bit of discussion; it seems many experts think that its effects will not be really noticeable if you have adequate RAM and a good hard disk. With your signature config of 2GB ram and a 160/7200 drive I suspect you won't see any real benefit from turbo memory.
Unfortunately I've not seen any recent (post SP1) benchmarks/tests so I don't know for sure.
Personally, I put the ~$25 into an extra gig of ram and I have a 250/7200 drive sitting here waiting for my T400 to arrive. If I later on see evidence that turbo memory is worthwhile in a system with 3GB ram and a fast hard drive, I may order the card and add it to my system. I'm pretty skeptical that I would notice any real difference. -
Are posts of this type tolerated in this forum?

You have got to be kidding me. -
Well...Definitely my behavior is wrong in your eyes and I'm not going to argue that I'm right. I know I can't persuade you. I just answered other's question honestly without distortion. So either I can choose to say I'm going to buy a vista ultimate or say the real thing. I would rather choose to say what I think.
Poor isn't the reason for somebody to steal, but if you're so deprived of other choices, then that's the only option. I never feel self righteous in doing this thing - this is my first laptop, and I've to steal other's software to use it. That's bad enough for me. -
I was thinking badly whether I should upgrade to the 9600. I'm using CCP, so the price are slightly less than the price in Newegg. I found now it has reached 1560$, if I upgrade to 9600 I might have to pay another 170 to 190 dollars...and that will be 1730 or more...
-
If price the reason for pirating software, wouldn't this pay for more than twice the cost of upgrading to Vista Ultimate?
IMHO, unless you specifically know the software you're going to use which will benefit from a processor upgrade in a meaningful way, it isn't worth the cost. Even the basic processors are overkill for most laptop buyers; RAM and HDD are the more important bottlenecks to address. -
Great criticism. yes. I just feel it's not worth to spend 300$ more on vista ultimate, given the fact I've already bought the home basic. Thanks for the reproach.
-
I'll be using Mathematica, which is a math computing software demanding system computing ability. I used to wait for a whole day for its results. But other than that I don't have special need.
-
I am just confused. Price of Ultimate upgrade is $95 on CPP from Home Basic. Not $300.
And after Sept 8th, Vista Ultimate Upgrade is ~$65 to buy from Microsoft through The Ultimate Steal if you're a college student. I bought Office 2007 Ultimate in the spring; it's the real deal.
Guess the point is don't justify on price and being poor when you're considering expenses three times the item you're saying you can't afford.
I'm done on this topic. 'nuff said. -
you're right.
I'll buy it. -
I upgraded from XP Home to Vista Ultimate through the microsoft deal at my college and it only cost 12 bucks! what do u mean 65...
-
how did you got it?
-
Not all schools are part of MSDNAA or even if they are, they may not offer Vista Ultimate. In which case, one might use the Ultimate Steal option which just requires a .edu email address and the ability to prove you're a student taking at least half a credit. Not that they checked in my case.
A hard choice
