I'm at the point where I'm definitely NOT thinking about a 14.1" WXGA T61 for college and just buying the D630. These quality issues are bothersome and I don't want to have to deal with them. Should I still go for it or should I stick to the T61?

Perhaps you might want to take a look at the HP 6910p instead? There's a guy here who has a small review of his unit: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=2148510#post2148510
Anyway, just an alternative approach.
With the amount of problems with the T61 I would probably jump on the D630, if you need it for college in the fall. You might not have the time to get a replacment for the T61 if you should get a bad one. -
Exactly. Now what exactly is the R61 model and differences? I priced out an R61 with 14.1" widescreen and it was EXACTLY the same price as the T61 with exact options.

Please tell me that you didn't read the beginner of Johnny's thread and decide this, it was a joke. Read on if this is what is your big turn off.
-
I have had my T61 for just about a month...I have had zero problems or issues with it. Most of the threads you see are complaints because everyone that is doing fine with them are not bothering to make threads saying that everything is A OK.
-
To be honest, I did. I hate seeing stuff like that. But I might just get the T61. I just looked at the D630 and said no to it. I'm checking out the HP right now.
-
What made you say no to the D630?
-
You also have to realize that everybody has relative standards. Some people say that it has bad build quality, others say that the screen "off-centeredness" bothers them a lot. There is no perfect laptop out there, at least in my opinion. You can come very close though
EDIT: You may want to consider the M4300 - it is an update to the Precision M65 which is built off the D630 I think. Not sure about the cost differences though. -
I'll check it out. The D630 was a little large for my liking.
Edit: M4300 looks sweet but the screen is too big. The 13.3's are the best but I'm not dealing with Dell and their XPS delays on the M1330. -
If you're " definitely not thinking about" getting a t 61, then yes, I would say go for the d 630.
-
I think I'm just going to get it. I've spent too much time looking at every little option on everything.
14.1" Widescreen WXGA+
Intel T7300 2.0GHz
2GB RAM (buying off NewEgg)
Quadro video
100GB 7200RPM HD
7 Cell Battery -
Good strategy, don't get bogged down in the details. Just get whichever one meets most of your needs best.
Go with your gut. -
Its same for me, My T61 has been trouble free, not one blue screen, crash or case issues.
-
Mine's pretty much going to be the exact same as yours except I'll have Windows XP Pro, no Bluetooth, 2.0GHz T7300, and no webcam (I've got my USB one here)
-
Good Idea staying with XP, that's what I did. I just can't do everything I want to do with Vista.
-
Nice specs...whats the price difference with an equally equipped D630...I assume the Dell is a couple 100 less right?
-
Go ahead. Get a Dell. I've had 2 of them. Both machines has 2 motherboard replacements within 18 months.
Enjpoy your Dell! I wouldn't buy one if it's going to travel any. Around the house it's fine for use while you're on the couch or on the toilet (where a Dell belongs!). -
Gotta 2nd that.
-
Believe it or not, its a few bucks more. Not by much though.
How long does it usually take Lenovo to send out T61s from the time you hit the Purchase button? -
Support my petition.

Their turnaround is getting pretty good. I purchased mine on the 5th of july and it shipped on the 13th. So if you don't choose parts that say "Selecting this option may delay your shipment" you should have it a couple of weeks depending on what shipping you get.
-
Yeah. I just priced it out again (oddly enough it went down about $50) but the screen gives me this for the 14.1" WXGA+ and wants me to "Call for More Information"
All These T61 Problems Are A Turn OFF...
