Why run Windows Server on a laptop anyway? Nice deal though.

ya... i would recommend you to get a desktop if you want a server... you can easily get a quadcore for half that price... and you can always perform remote desktop... thus not requiring a separate monitor. Then you can improve your server machine with the extra cash. Oh gigabit is an AWESOME must if you have a server =)

Why run server? Because it is an awesome OS. Why run Vista is the real question. Most drivers that work with Vista DO work with server (or at least in my experience with a 32bit environment). Server 2008 is much snappier than Vista and you can have all the visual effects. I run Server 2008 on my workstation and plan on trying it out on my laptop.

i think the question was more towards... having a server on a laptop.. not.. the question about Server 2008.

I am sure I'll figure out the driver issue, because it has a version for Vista 64 so I don't think it would be a problem at all. 4G memory is not for anything but Hyper-V, a feature in Server 2008, which allows you to run multiply virtual machines.

I built a desktop couple years ago, running Virtual Server R2 and 4g of ram, runs 3 instances of servers and XP in it, along with a Virtual PC for my regular tasks. The Thinkpad will take over the responsibility for my daily use and allows me to experiment with some cool features.

As jaredy said, I don't miss anything running W2008, the only thing that Vista has W2008 doesn't is the gadget bar which I can happily live without.

Just hoping it can be built and delivered on time :)

so another words... your T61 will become your testing environment.. and not a real server that will be on 24/7? Cause I can't imagine having a laptop being a dedicated server

side note the T61 is an awesome machine

LOL, no, T61 is tough, but it is certainly not a server class machine :D I don't need UPS for it though :D
At the same time, I am typing this in a Virtual PC running on a server :p

The deal is great, with labor day coupon and THANKS to a link on this forum!

It's amazing how computer stuff getting cheaper if you are willing to go just a little off the edge. Bought a HP nc8xxx for wife last year, paid north of $1500 with lesser specs.

I’m going to be doing the same thing—and we’ll both have one MAJOR annoyance. Unlike userland-based virtualization, Hyper-V operates at the kernel level—and there’s no support for power management when running Hyper-V :( .

is standby(sleep) gonna be an issue? So far I know, there is no way to enable sleep/standby on w2008 server.

I think your concept of an server OS is a little limited. You don't have to run Server 2008 on a machine that you are going to actually being using on a live mission critical machine (blade, rack...laptop, etc). It can be a great workstation OS with getter tools, performance, and flexibility. If you have volume licensing keys for server 2008 I think it is worth trying.

Also you can enable the power management features just the same as vista but I have not personally tested them. Check www.win2008workstation.com for a lot of information regarding server 2008 as a workstation OS.

Almost all of the power management features that are in Vista are in 2008—it’s just that these become non-functional if you use Hyper-V.

Um... I was more talking about him using the laptop as a dedicated server.. and nothing to do with the OS... just to clear things up. Good thing about being a compsci major I get free Microsoft software... to bad MSDN Academic
    Alliance Program doesn't have Server 2008 =(

Agree, Hyper-V probably will disable power management on the laptop. The W2008 itself still has plenty of power management features. Just use W2008 as an awesome workstation OS, not necessarily running Hyper-V all the time.

On a separate box, I am actually running Virtual Server R2 on W2008, haven't got chance to try out Hyper-V RTM yet, since I got W2008 pretty early.

After doing some research on Intel GMA X4500MHD, decided not to go with discrete graphics (T61). After all I don't play games, hardly watch any movie on it, so...canceled T61 and ordered a T500 through CPP.

    T500 + extra 2G (total 4G) + tax = $1100. Still an awesome deal!

    Lose:
    discrete graphics card
a bit penalty on the main memory (4G - graphic mem)
    a bit performace
    $110

    Gain:
    bus speed
    memory speed
    0.03G faster CPU :D
    1 new generation

Worth it? I think so :D

I'll retain the login name, since for at least one night, I paid for a T61 some where :p
