I would like to know if there’s thermal throttling with 6-core 8750H. It seems xps 15 has serious problem out of box and need a lot of fine tuning. If P52 out of box runs cool without too much throttling then it would be awesome.
-
Here’s my order.
Xeon e-2176m
4K display
32GB ECC RAMs
P2000
Intel 9560
Will add 512g 970pro ssd upon arrival. -
That’s my concern. I couldn’t find any official test and review on thermal throttling so far on internet. Decided to cancel the order.
-
There's someone in this thread who has bought one and done some testing on it.
http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...ok-15-g5-or-lenovo-thinkpad-p52.820474/page-7
Doesn't look promising, which is a shame, as I'd really like one for the sturdy construction and warranty. Still going to wait for some more reviews and info, but I'm also looking at what else is around. -
There are several user reports on /r/thinkpad now.
So far only one has thermal throttle and will use warranty on it.
All others seem to have no thermal throttle at all.
How ever, there is power throttle at some point.
This is for the i7-8850H + P3200. -

I'm crossing my fingers. I just put in an order for the 8850/P3200/4k. I'll ugprade the 8GB to 32, and the 500 7200 to an 850 Pro 512GB, and put in a 871b 512GB and an MX300 1TB in the M.2 slots. Still kicking myself for selling my P50...hopefully the extra $1000 I'm paying for the P3200, 2 cores, and half the RAM is worth it...

Even those often do not have proper thermals out of the box. Sadly, we are being told be increasing numbers of "people" that real world "content creators" don't need to run CPU and GPU at 100% for long time, only gamers do that.
Bunch of backpedaling and astroturfing to explain away inferior products, IMO. -

pretty sure that site just translates from ZOL or 51nb

Yepp, had a similar thought myself when I read it. Or rather, that it might not be the original source.

I have the 8850HQ and P3200
And my review is here.

It's more of Intel's problem than lenovo's
You can undervolt a LOT! The short boost TDP is not a sensible number -
If you adjust the tdp using xtu will it hold or reset to 55/78?
-
RMSMajestic Notebook Consultant
cooling is not enough.
Single stress CPU gives 45, and When stressing both, CPU has only 35W -
Great review!
-
Even if you test with the lenovo 230w adapter from P70/P71 it still doesn't allow more than 45/35?
Have you tried to repaste the system and see if that would improve your cooling performance and therefore let you more performance out of the chip? -
RMSMajestic Notebook Consultant
I used the 230W PSU in the very beginning.
When I undervolted 150mV, the original cooling is enough for default clock speed. I think there might be newer stepping of CPU/ revision for heatsink soon -
wonder what will change -
Why would a new heat sink change power limiting? Or do the manufacturers not trust their on thermal throttling so that they turn down the power limit even though the problem is really heat?
-
Google Translate really did a mess of translating that, even claiming that you used hamsters to test it which I doubt
Would appreciate a short summary in English if possible, I am especially interested in CPU performance and thermal/power throttling. Based on Google Translate, I get the feeling you are not impressed with how it handles CPU and GPU load simultaneous, but that with only light GPU use (perhaps only iGPU) it is quite ok, but as mentioned, Google Translate had a tough time with this

typo, I used the 230W PSU *since* the very beginning -
RMSMajestic Notebook Consultant
What I meant was that the CPU cooling was not as good as I expected. But GPU cooling is quite decent, or much better than I expected.
I also disabled the ****ty iGPU from the very beginning. -
Thank you. That is kind of a bummer for someone like me that would primarilly use the CPU and very little GPU. Constantly trying to find something better for my usage scenario than the XPS15 but that turns out to be quite hard, probably because the XPS15 isn't really all that bad
And yes, I realize that the P52 isn't really intened for my usage scenario.
-
so new revision of cooler or cpu, where did you hear this info?
-
RMSMajestic Notebook Consultant
I did not hear any info like that. I only hope that there will be Xeon + P3200 speced P52 later and also hope that lenovo make another better heatsink for that spec -
Can the xeon even boost higher than the 8850?
I know the single core maximum is higher but how about the multicore boost limits? -
Probably won’t happen. That’s gonna be easy to make decision.
-
Can you PM me? I cant seem to find where to msg you. Thank you.
-
RMSMajestic Notebook Consultant
not really, both xeon and 8850 are severely bottlenecked by TDP and temperature.
It also depends on the individual CPU. Mine 8850HQ is a gigantic potato which requires 1.3V at 4Ghz..... and the default cinebench is only ~1080, about 100 points lower than other reviews. -
did you set static set voltage or just undervolt in throttlestop?
setting a static voltage is better since it can sometimes result in lower voltage needed to sustain a particular clockspeed -
RMSMajestic Notebook Consultant
you never know, X61 didn't had T9300 CPU and other heatsink (single but wider heatpipe, better performance) in the beginning -
RMSMajestic Notebook Consultant
That's the voltage noticed in CPU-z -
can you try measuring with hwinfo (during stress test only)
-
RMSMajestic Notebook Consultant
During stress test it is bottlenecked by a lot of factors such as TDP and temp. also clock speed flucturates and results are not accurate. The short boost TDP (75W) is enough for the vast majority of benchmarks to run at much higher turbo.
During stress test it's all about 0.85V-0.9V. -
can you try to change short and long boost to a higher value with intel XTU?
-
RMSMajestic Notebook Consultant
Yes, but thermal and TDP throttle will kick in -
so when the cpu nears tjmax the tdp will be reset to default values?
-
Looking for opinions of the P52 8850H and P2000 for 4k 60fps video editing in Resolve.
An alternate would be with the P3200.
Thanks! -
8850H is same as xeon
p3200 would give you better performance, given if resolve actually uses the gpu? -
if you don't need quadro or xeon, then don't buy a workstation
-
How is a 8850H a Xeon? Or do you mean same performance?
-
I'm prepared to agree but...you also get a lot better build quality, professional grade stuff, and most often better cooling etc. But at a huge price premium.
Of course, I know that you already know this, and I really can't fault you recommendation, even though I myself has a P52 on delivery as I want to testdrive it and compare to the XPS15.olee22 likes this. -
not better cooling that's for sure
compare a regular gaming laptop cooling solution to the thinkpad laptop, most often gaming laptops have bigger heatsink and cool better -
Well, the usually have weird design, abysmal battery life, chargers as big as your dog and quite poor build quality as well. I've tried to lug around a few gaming laptops for work in my days and always ended up going back to a boring business alternative. There are however some interesting alternatives these days, like the new Razer Blade 15, which I also gave a chance before returning it.huntnyc likes this.

Well, just ordered a P52...seemed like the best value for everything I desired and needed. Looking forward to it!
i7-8850H

32GB RAM

I only kept the 500gb HDD though since I'm going to order some Samsung 970's to fill the M.2 slots.huntnyc likes this. -
Did you order it through corporate perk? It's not the best price now.ike2k likes this.
-
You should wait until Thanksgiving. There might be 40%-45% off.
-
I ordered with my corporate perk code yeah.
Hmm. Think I should cancel and wait?

If you are not in a hurry, then I suggest you wait. There will definitely be better price soon.
Any Thinkpad P52 owner?
