That one download supports both x64 and x86. The disclaimer where it states only 32 bit applies only to specific machines ala Thinkpad Reserve Edition ( see *1 on the page).
But either way good that you got it. ;)

Well I got everything downloaded but now I have a problem. Last night when I tried to burn a bootable iso Nero said the file is bigger then 2gb so I have to burn it as UDF. I did and when I tried to boot it today it wont run. So since it wont let me burn it as iso or bootable iso, I cant run the disk.

I tried putting the vista files in a shared folder but it wont allow me to delete the other partition if I do it that way.

EDIT: okay I got the boot disk to work but now I have another problem. Install doesn't locate the hidden partition! I already burned a recovery disk so I want to delete hidden partition, how do I do it. Eek.

I have the 100gb but it only shows 86.3gm, it says Disk 0 Partition 2 and Primary, I don't see a small one. Hm...

If no replies soon I guess I'll just suck it and keep the partition. No biggie, but if easy fix, somebody help please.

Meh, just went ahead with it. Wasted too long on this already. Gah.

When I try to start my clean install by booting to the DVD I get "couldn't find NTLDR" and it boots to the Vista login screen. I have consulted the Great Oracle, Google, and from what I can gather this shouldn't be needed for boot loading in Vista but I haven't seen what appears like an appropriate fix or work around. Any guidance?
    TIA

Are you aware that the answer happens to be in the first post of this thread, in effect the very guide itself?
were you trying to boot from the DVD or just booting to C drive? If you weren't trying to boot to DVD then adjust the booting priority in the BIOS so it goes straight to C. That error message usually means that you were trying to boot from a DVD that wasn't bootable..

Gah! Somehow missed that bullet of info at the bottom. Wouldve saved me half an hour playing with the bios. I searched online and found a bios solution which I couldnt find in my bios. Oh well, too late now. I just spent over an hour installing all the drivers. :(

    Thanks Morphy!
I think you might have supplied me with the answer but unfortunately it raises another question. The DVD I am trying to boot from is one that I made from the files to create my own WUA disc. I can start the disc from a windows environment and it begins the Vista install process so it seems to be done correctly. Perhaps it isn't quite 100%, I might need to either burn a new copy or download 1 of the files again. If I need to download 1 of the files again I would guess it isn't X13-49120.exe and I hope its not install.wim!

You're probably missing boot.wim...need that to make the resulting image bootable.

Or you can use vlite...it lets you create a bootabe Vista install cd/dvd from your vista installation files...even customizes the install if you want to.

I found the same problem with the FAQ link. On the first page of this thread, a little more than half way, there is a "Frequently Asked Questions" section. I assume that's where the link should have taken us.

Thanks so much morphy, once I read "You're probably missing boot.wim...need that to make the resulting image bootable." I went back and re-read "how to burn a WAU DVD" and realized that I had done it incorrectly. Viola! I now have a Vista DVD.

Too bad that's not the end of this never ending story. I have gone through the process of deleting the hidden partition and installing a clean copy of Vista twice now and both times the ABR restore does not work to activate my copy. I checked the Key the first time and it seemed fine and when I clicked on restore a cmd prompt window opened and it did its thing. At the end it says to check and hit enter to exit. Well when I checked I still had 30 days to activate. I restored to factory and went through the whole procedure again, getting the same activation key and when I got to the point of restoring it same results.

I have a hunch that it may be related to the fact that my computer came w/ Vista Premium but something caused a major meltdown so Lenovo sent me a OS restore disc but it was for Vista Business with a different Key than the original. Any ideas as to a workaround?

    Thanks

My Z61t came w/ VHP pre-installed but after about 10 days started acting up and then decided that the Key was no longer valid. After 3 calls to Lenovo they sent me an OEM OS restore disk but as it turns out it was for Vista Business so I've been trying to clean install VB. Perhaps I need to check Home Premium when I load the WAU disk?

    Thanks again!

If you were using the ABR made from Home Premium, it won't work on the VB install. So yeah you need to check the install as Home Premium to retain the license.

This PC came w/ Vista Premium pre-installed and in preparation for doing a clean install I used ABR to backup the key and cert. Before I had started any of the clean install my Z61t started acting odd and over the course of 2 or 3 days started locking me out of programs and then told me my Vista was not a legal copy. Long story short Lenovo sent me a set of recovery disks including an OEM Vista Business restore disk. So after doing my restore I used ABR to backup the new key and cert and then removed the hidden partition and did my clean install. When I attempt to restore the key and cert it appears to work except that my Vista still says 30 days to activate.

At this point I guess that I can go through the whole process for the umptenth time  and instead of highlighting Vista Business try Premium or just restore to Vista Business which is pretty clean, unless someone can suggest another option.

Anyway thanks again morphy and all you guys who have shared your knowledge and time.

    Toys,

Did you ever activate your copy of Vista to begin with? If not, then perhaps that's the reason you're prompted to activate it within 30 days of install... If what I read is correct, the ABR will contain info on whether the thing's been activated or not, so that could be the issue you're facing. Just a thought.

When I install Vista Business from the OS restore disk that Lenovo sent me it shows up as activated. There is clearly something else going on.

Will this procedure work with a copy of Vista with integrated SP1 or only with Vista original?

Sorry you have gone through so much trouble. This has worked great for most everyone as far as I know, but you have a couple things going on that make your situation unique so I have a couple suggestions.

First, you really need to start off with a factory restore/install, make sure you are fully activated, and know for sure what version you have installed BEFORE using the ABR utility to backup. I really you have already been through a bunch of trouble, but you might want to restore again -> go to "Control Panel" -> "System" and check your version.

Second, the information in the guide about making an install disk from the WAU file on your laptop is new information. I made the assumption that it would work like any other install disk, but it's possible that the WAU disk made with vlite is causing problems. You can try downloading the files necessary to make a Vista install disk instead.

Also, as Orev mentioned, you could try "Plan B" for activation. If you try using the keycode on the bottom of your laptop, just remember that that keycode is probably for Vista Premium since that is what you originally purchased. You'll need to use a Vista Install disk to install Premium the type in the sticker code during instation, then call Microsoft to get it activated.

Lastly, regarding the F.A.Q., when I type "F.A.Q" I put periods between the letters. Otherwise when you type "FAQ" without periods it becomes a hyperlink for the notebookreview F.A.Q.

The guide will work for doing a clean install. The basic premise of the guide will work on any laptop using any prior Vista installation with any Vista install disk.

However, when it comes to activation using the ABR... ABR can only backup the activation from a factory installation and it can only restore activation after a clean install using a retail, OEM, or Windows Anytime Upgrade disk. I believe all of your answers are covered in the F.A.Q. at the bottom of the guide.

    Hey guys,

I'm typing on my (still) very solid Vista installation (this article rocks!) and I just thought of something.

If we reinstall Vista, can we use the same ABR files generated the first time to re-activate Vista, or do we have to always generate those files after a clean install for the next installation? I'm assuming it's going to always be the same OEM keys, but I just want to make sure

Use the ABR files generated the first time as many times as you'd like. I'm not even sure if ABR will backup activation after a clean install since it is no longer considered a factory install.

Thanks all! Yes this install is quite unique. The original OS Home Premium became totally fubar'd, I couldn't restore a backup that I had created, couldn't factory restore from the partition or from a set of restore disks that I had burned. The restore disks that Lenovo sent me included an OS restore disk for Vista Business. I had done the first ABR backup while in failure mode by accessing cmd prompt during "Limited Functionality" and again after the restore with 2 different Keys neither works.

The Vista disk that I burned is from the files online, there is no WAU on my computer. So I can try doing the procedure again but instead of highligting Business highlight Premium, or plan B. If I do plan B can I use ABR after activation or do I need to call MS anytime I need reactivation?

Again thanks for all the work and help!

Ok thanks very much. So this process will only work if the factory installation version of vista matches the clean version being installed.

I've yet to receive my machine and try this out, but I've already prepared myself for the clean install by getting all the files etc.

Always did a clean install of XP on my previous machines and always found my machine to run much better/smoother/quicker. Also used nlite to get rid of a lot of the junk that MS deems important.

If you still have those original restore disks that you created, you might want to try them again. If I remember correctly I think you might have to insert the last disk created, first. I'm not sure though.

"Plan B" does not involve ABR. Plan B is a list of a few other options to activate just in case ABR doesn't work. So if you have tried everything and you have exhausted yourself with ABR, you might as well just use the sticker on the bottom of your laptop and be done with it. That sticker (in your specific case) should be a Vista Premium key. Use your Vista install disk and select "Premium" during the install process. If you view the screenshot in Step 3.8, do you see the blank that says "DO NOT ENTER KEY LEAVE BLANK"? In your case go ahead and enter the sticker key.

After the Vista installation is complete you have the option to activate by phone or over the internet. I don't know the phone number for activation. If you would like to activate over the internet do this:

Open Windows Activation by clicking the Start button , clicking Computer, clicking Properties, and then clicking "Click here to activate Windows now". Administrator permission required If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation. (NOTE: it is my understanding that it can take 1 to 2 weeks for Vista to become activated when using the online activation method so be patient.)

It sounds like you got the idea. As a word of caution, I would be careful about using vlite for "getting rid of junk" for the time being. The last time I was on the vlite forum (its been a few months) there was talk that vlite'd installations would not be upgradedable to Vista SP1 when it is released... Meaning that it would be required to do another clean install to get SP1 on your system. It's been awhile since I've checked into it. Maybe this is no longer an issue. I don't want to spread false information. My point being... go to the vlite forum and lurk around a bit to get more information on SP1 integration.

    Hello all,

I am a first time t61 owner and poster. I just received my t61 T8300, Vista x64 Business and added 4 GB RAM and have been underwhelmed with the performance (mentally). I feel a clean install will solve my woes. As many have mentioned before, I have 100 processes running and I find that unacceptable.

My question is. I got a Vista Ultimate x64 disk from work and was planning to do this install with that instead. I was wondering if this will work? Will this conflict with my x64 business? I plan to wipe the hard drive partition and just have a clean install.

If this does not, work, what are my consequences/solutions? Could i just use the ultimate disk and input my business x64 key and i'd be able to use it as business instead of ultimate? Or would i just need to get a vista anytime upgrade off Ebay and install?

Or is it just safer to just look for a business 64 disk? My only reasoning was to upgrade to ultimate was that I wanted to be able to watch DVD's and since ultimate already has the driver, I thought that would be easier.

Thanks for the help and sorry for the stupid questions.

Oh believe me, I wouldn't start with vlite 'till I got to research all the pitfalls beforehand. Advice well-taken though and is but part of the "rules of common sense" (does that still exist)? :p

Welcome to notebookreview. :) It appears as though you haven't read the F.A.Q. at the bottom of the guide. All of your questions are answered there. I think the very first F.A.Q. answers your question:

    • What disks can I use to do a clean install? You can use a retail, oem, or anytime upgrade disk. If using a retail or OEM disk, it does not matter if it is basic, premium, business, or ultimate. The disks have EVERY version of Vista. The only difference is 32-bit disks and 64-bit disks.

    • Can I use a retail or OEM Vista DVD instead of the "Anytime Upgrade" DVD? Yes, barrow a retail disk or OEM disk from a friend and follow the guide. The clean install process and the end result will be the same. Basically the Anytime Upgrade DVD, any retail or OEM DVD are all the same installation disks. The only thing different about them is the label stamped on the disk. All of these Vista installation disks contain EVERY version (i.e. Basic, Premium, Business, Ultimate) of Vista. It is the product key that determines the version.

If you purchased Business then you can only do a clean install with Business using this guide. If you want Ulitmate, you can do a clean install to Business then pay for the upgrade to Ultimate. If you want to play DVDs on Business there are plenty of free applications that will work. Try google.

Also, please read the guide in its entirety. Thanks

Hey stallen, you got rep. It really bugs me that when i use the restore disks from Lenovo, Vista Business loads and is activated yet there doesn't seem to be a way to get a clean install of Business. So it appears that I will have to load Vista Premium and call MS to activate that and then try the clean install again. Can 1 of you guys explain why I can get VB to load and be activated but can't clean install it??????

For my Penryn, do I need to install all "infinst_autol.exe", "Intel Graphics Media Accelerator Driver for Windows Vista 64 (exe) v 15.8" and "INF Update Utility - Primarily for Intel 3, 900 Series Chipsets"?

I read what you wrote in regards to installing all drivers/INF, but I really have no idea if one includes the other, etc.

    Lenovo T61 (model 6457-6DU) (15.4")

I bought it few months ago and didn’t get much use of it for a while (due to remodeling the house). Now I am getting to use it, huh. First, gotta start with good comments (rather “bad things” always first)…

    The good…

The 9-cell battery is awesome (even though it’s sticking out in the rear-end)! I like the ThinkLight (Fn+PgUp). The ThinkVantage was neat (rather going into the Control Panel). It has two “Ctrl” keys (I use both sides). Firewire’d. I tend to use the TrackPoint buttons more than the Touchpad buttons. 15.4” is great. It has “Energy Star” sticker on it!!

    The bad…

The “Fn” and “Ctrl” keys should be switched around (tend to press the Fn when want to use the left Ctrl key). Is there a way to program it or something?

For some reason the keyboard is awkward? I could use other laptops fine, but this is different? Maybe I am being “too careful” with this “brand new” toy.

It’s pretty heavy, but that’s not a problem at all.

    Please correct me…

This model does NOT have Turbo Memory. Say “No” for it doesn’t have it, or “Yes” is it has it included.

    The question(s)…

Ok, as many of you already know (before the clean install), it has a loooong boot time. Not only that, it was taxing heavily on BOTH Core (100% MAX most of time during boot, like for 7 fat minutes)!?!? So, I took some time researching on Stallen’s “Clean Install Guide”. Then I made attempt to do it. It all worked out. Now, surprising to me that it still has long boots and some heavy CPU loads (during boots). On top of that, the memory stays at ~23% (yes, after the clean install)? Maybe I need to re-do the whole installation and install less drivers or maybe use Black Viper’s Guide? I installed just about all the drivers as listed (in order) on the “Clean Install Guide” (see below if you want to see the file names).

On the other laptop, I use to have “Intel PRO” (something with those wordings, much better than the Windows’ wireless). I couldn’t see it when I installed all those drivers (two of the files were supposed to be Intel PRO?)? While at this subject, how to make sure, with the T61, that I am using the Intel PRO instead of the Windows’ version (I forgot how it was done on the other laptop). I want to disable or turn off the Windows’ wireless.

Is the WiFi different than Intel PRO wireless?

I saw “Presentation Driver” somewhere, what is that? For MS PowerPoint?

How to disable the Windows’ power management to use the 7kku06ww.exe?

I wonder if I could left out some of those drivers? I mean if it doesn’t apply to networking or something important… even though it all looks important? I know I would need the audio driver for sounds. But what is “Lenovo System Interface driver”? Is the “UltraNav driver” for the red TrackPoint? When I installed the “Intel wireless driver” (as assumed it’s “WiFi” according to the post #1), it installed as supposed to do. Then (as in order of the list) when extracting the “Intel PRO/1000 LAN Adaptor Software”, it appears that it’s an update something, was that needed (notice it says “Software” rather “Driver” ;)?

Lastly and most concern… before the clean install, the screen does NOT blink. Now with clean install, it blinks once (maybe twice) for like a second or so. It happens after a long boot. Like after five minutes, I start with the mouse and when it blinks, the mouse cursor goes back to the center of the screen and if I was doing something (like attempt to start IE or opening a prog in the Start menu), it closes and “refresh” the Desktop. Is it conflict with the driver?

The main objective is I want the least junk in to lessen the background running. I haven’t even installed the Kasperski AntiVirus and the T61 is a drag (imagine how much slower it might be with AV installed). On my other laptop, upon boot, it only take FEW seconds after the Desktop appears before it all ready to go (the hourclock stops and HDD light stop blinking). There’s ~50 items in the Task Manager, which is good.

There’s few other small things I like to ask, but I forgot or stuff I can take care on my own.

Sorry for this such long post. I just want to make sure I give enough details. Comments or suggestions?

    Chuck

    Drivers installed in the order:

** infinst_autol.exe (INF Update Utility – Primarily for Intel 3, 900 Series Chipset)
** iata78_enu.exe (for without Turbo Memory)
** (here I couldn’t locate the “Matrix Storage Manager Driver” so therefore not installed)
    ** 7kku06ww.exe (ACPI power management)
** 7kd534ww.exe (NVIDIA display driver, at first I download 7ad528ww.exe, then read somewhere it wasn’t the correct driver, so download the 7kd534ww.exe)
    ** 7ka213ww.exe (audio driver)
    ** 7igx11ww.exe (UltraNav driver)
** (here I couldn’t locate the “UltraNav utility” so therefore not installed)
** 7kwv50ww.exe (Intel wireless driver, was that meant “Wifi driver”?)
    ** 7kvu22ww.exe (Hotkey driver)
** 7jif09ww.exe (Lenovo System Interface driver)
** 7kxx13ww.exe (SmartCard reader driver, same as “Integrated Card Reader”?, also after extracted, there wasn’t “setup.exe” so therefore not installed)
** 7krv21ww.exe (Intel PRO/1000 LAN adapter software, also no “setup.exe” so not installed)
    ** 7fma13ww.exe (modem software)
** 7kba12ww.exe (Bluetooth with enhanced data rate software)
    ** oss704ww.exe (Intel chipset support)
** osfg03ww.exe (Registry patch to enable DIPM on SATA hard drive)
** osfh02ww.exe (Registry patch enabling Power Management in S3 State of USB port)
** osfi02ww.exe (did not install, don’t want to use the fingerprint)
** osfl02ww.exe (did not install, don’t want “wake on LAN” ;)

ok that's quite a bit of stuff for a first post to digest properly so I'm only going to touch on what I see as the biggest problem and possible cause: Long boot times.

1.You don't have intel matrix Driver installed. You need that for SATA functionality. The .exe are self extracting executables. After its done its thing you need to navigate to the folder it extracted to and run the install. Of course, goes without saying you will need prior knowldege of where this folder is Normally C:\DRIVERS\<..subfolder>

    2. Alot of detail but you left out the specs on your system and that could shed some light. Mainly how much RAM do you have?

Ok, so I restored Vista Business from the Lenovo disks which works fine and shows activation is fine. Used ABR to backup key and cert, both are there and then used my Vista disk to do a clean install of Vista Business and then used ABR to restore. Not activated and when I try ABR to backup it shows the key that it previously had restored but no certificate. So for some reason the cert is not restoring. I'm going to try Plan B again and see what happens but if someone, orev, has any insights that would be great.

Yeap. The HDD light keeps blinking after the desktop. I mean it takes quite a while before the HDD light drops to idle.

As I am looking at the Device Manager, it shows:

    IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers
    -ATA Channel 0
    -Intel(R) 82801 HEM/HBM SATA AHCI Controller
    -Intel(R) ICH8M Ultra ATA Storage Controllers - 2850

Would it mean it's already installed? Maybe I should reinstall clean Vista and watch the Device Manager closely (to see what was being installed).

Right now there are four yellow "!" in:

    Other devices
    -Base System Device (three times)
    -Biometric Coprocessor

It's 6457-6DU. When I ordered it, it was as what it was stocked. Anyway:

    Core2Duo T7500 (2.20GHz)
    2GB RAM
    32-bit OS Vista Ultimate
    NVIDIA Quadro NVS 140M

question... in the C:\DRIVERS\Vista\USBPMON (from download, not c:\swtools\driver), what is "USB S3"?

The HDD capacity is 93.1GB, keeps me wonder if I really did remove the hidden partition? It does show 100,027,854,848 bytes. BTW, I uncheck the "Indexing Service", so that part isn't causing the long boot (or cause the HDD to keep blinking). I will be looking for any monitoring software, perhaps from Black Viper's.

In close, right now I am feeling eager to to one more clean install. Should I be using the drivers from c:\swtools\drivers? Or download from NVIDIA website (for the video driver)? I will do little more research before jumping into another format the HDD.

    Chuck

    ADDED :

Is the NVIDIA Quadro NVS 140M a dedicated graphic card or on-board integrated graphic?

Is the NVIDIA Quadro NVS 140M a 256MB, non-shared graphic?

Woo Hoo!!!! Success!!!! As I posted the Lenovo restore to Vista Business worked but when i attempted to clean install and do an ABR restore the cert was not installing. Plan b didn't work, perhaps i did something incorrectly, but i was sure that all i needed was to reinstall the cert. So i consulted the Great Oracle Google and found a different slmgr cmd prompt http://forums.mydigitallife.info/showthread.php?p=562 see post #495
    and done, sweeeeeet!
Thanks to all for the guide and help!

I did the clean install and everything seemed to be going smoothly. However when I went to double check to make sure I had everything installed properly I noticed that I could not install the Intel pro as my wifi driver. I saw the instructions ask you get the hotfix and since it is almost 1 am in ca, i am unable to call microsoft so perhaps the hotfix is the solution. i know the laptop is equipped w/ the 4965agn and i will go through the install, it registers, but then i go to check the modem for intel pro and only the thinkpad modem shows up.

    Any solutions?

I assume you are looking in Device Manager under Modems? Try looking under Network Adapters instead.

@CNT = whew... yeah that's quite a post. As morphy says... I don't think your drivers are getting properly installed. You can't just skip driver installations and say "Oh well, can't figure out that driver... I guess I'll move on to the next." You need to read the "read me" text files associated with each driver to know it's purpose and you need to read the install instructions to know how to properly install them. Follow each step of my guide and each step in the instructions. ALL of the driver that you say you can not find are on the driver matrix page (link in the guide).
    I'm sending you a PM.

For those of you confused about wifi. Does you wireless access work? If you purchased Intel 4965agn and you are able to connect to the internet, it is working properly. You only have one wifi capability. You don't have Vista wifi and Intel wifi. Lenovo only ships laptops with one piece of wifi hardware. So if you are able to connect to the internet via wifi, the device you purchased is working.

The 140M is not integrated (alothough all laptop video memory is somewhat integrated since you can't remove it or upgrade it). The 140M is typically 128mb of memory However it can also "steal" some memory from the RAM (another 128mb if I remember correctly.)

I will redo the download. Maybe it was because I may have been bothered while download the drivers, thus skipped or misled which driver to use. Once again, could I get a reply on some of the questions (just to make sure I know what the laptop is).

As for the rest of the issues, I will do a clean install and hopefully I don't skip anything this time. Few more questions...

    Anyone objects with Black Viper?

The second driver installation (according to the guide) is the Turbo Memory Driver. Since it is to my understanding that I do NOT have that, so therefore will skip one driver. Right?

Last question, is it still suggested to download the video driver from Lenovo and not NVIDIA website?

    Thank you.

I downloaded 64 bit files (boot.wim, install.m and x13-49121.exe) from mydigitlife. I used firefox to download. Then I moved the files over to C:\ and ran the exe. I am getting below error

"Cannot extract Windows Vista Setup to your hard drive. Please ensure that you can create files and folders in the same folder where VistaSetupPrep.exe was downloaded".

I verified the downloaded sizes from one of the other threads. I am doing this in Vista Ultimate 32-bit version.

Is it possible to create 64-bit bootable dvd vista install from a 32-bit os.
