When I get to step 4 part 12 where I choose to delete the Partitions and such. How do I do it? Also my main hardrive is titled as Disk 0 Partition 1 231.4 GB 231.1 GB PRIMARY.

I extended this drive with my other drive and it seemed to combine the two. But I started out with three drives (now down to two).

    The other drive says.

Disk 0 Unallocated Space 1.5 GB 1.5Gb (doesnt say primary)

What going on and what do I do?

Run a cmd prompt. Type "diskpart" and wait a few seconds.
Use the commands "list disk", "select disk" and "list partition", "select partition" to see what your disks hiding. When you have the partition selected you want to delete, type "delete partition override" and press enter.

I assume you have seen this link http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=2367169#post2367169/

    Good luck!

Guys, I have now deleted the hidden partition. But I have once before in Vista had the luck to extend my C:\ to include some space that was unallocated. However this is not possible on the lonovo, why..? No problem, I will format it again, its sooo easy.. =) But just wondering.. =)

    Seriously?

Click the link in the above post. Select the one that says "Intel Matrix Storage Manager" and the other one that says "Intel Chipset".

Sorry if this question has come up in a previous post but:
I'm trying to do a clean boot on my Lenovo n100 (0768-EMU)
I have been through driver matrix page and lenovo drivers page relevant to my computer and think I have everything relevant. I'm missing a couple of drivers from the suggested list (matrix stroage manager, ultranav dirver etc..). Some of these I'm not concerned about (assume they refer to features not present on the n100) but I haven't been able to find a link for the intel chipset driver either. I can download from another section of the driver matrix, but the file is not supported on the n100. I wanted to check if I need the intel chipset driver for n100 clean boot and if so what would be the most relevant driver

The chipset is an important driver to install. I would use the Intel website to install the driver if Lenovo does not provide one.

    1. Do you have SP1 installed?

    2. http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-70042

    3. You might be able to install it via Windows Update.

    That would be illegal.

    Use this: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/1033/ordermedia/default.mspx

    1. Yes. Windows Vista 64-bit SP1.

    2. Thank you. I'll try it out.

    3. Not sure about that one, but I will give it a shot.

My main concern is my sound. If I can get it to work again, that would be heaven!! Thx!

Update: Installing the BT does not work. Neither the support file or the software will work. It says it cannot detect my BT because it is not on. And I have no way of turning it on either. So I am not sure what to do...?

Yes, sorry. Kind of exhauseted at the time, trying to figure it all out.

I was going to post my setup process I used with my X200 Tablet, but I will just have to do it later. I followed much of what Stallen originally posted with some changes here and there....more to post later.

But as far as the sound and the BT, to make a long story short, had to start from the beginning again and do another clean install. I was for sure my sound would still not work, but then it came back. What was it....?

Well when I was doing the clean install, turns out I did not install the systems interface driver properly!! I extracted thr driver to the hard drive without actually installing it. May have forgot or got distracted while installing. So when I properly installed the systems driver this time, the sound magically came to life. And then when I got to the BT, to turn it on. It worked! So I was able to do both and the main culprit was the systems interface! I would have never known... :p

Okay...now it looks like I have another sound issue....

My headphones do not work. The sound comes from the speakers fine, and when I plug my headphones, the sound STILL transmits from the speakers. When I go to test my headphones, they work and I hear sound then.

Is there some setting I am missing to allow my headphones to work?

I'm toying with the idea of a clean install. Two questions:

    1) Is anyone out there going to say absolutely, positively DO NOT go from XP 32 to Vista Business 64 -- it's a huge mistake?

    2) If I wanted to make my own partition (after removing the Lenovo factory one) on which I would put a backup image of the system right after the clean install using the Vista Business backup function, how big a partition would I need?

    Thanks.

I did a clean install of Vista Business 64 on my laptop. I am very pleased with the results.

1.) It all depends on your usage. No, I wouldn't say it is a mistake except for a couple of reasons. One, if you use legacy apps with 16 bit installers or specifically say that they can't work with a 64 bit OS, then yes, making the move is a big mistake obviously. Also I would not pay for Vista if I already had an XP license I could use with me already, since the upgrade wasn't really worth it for me. I don't think the upgrade is worth it unless you want to go 64 bit to utilize more RAM. If you want to go 64 bit and stay with windows then go Vista 64 or wait for Windows 7.

Also I use Linux 99% of the time on my laptop. It works GREAT! I bought Vista Business 64 thinking that if Linux didn't work properly on my laptop then I could fall back to Windows(I wanted an OS that recognized all 4 GB of my RAM and utilized my 64 bit processor fully). A few years ago getting Linux to work on a laptop was difficult or impossible, and I thought this was still the case. Boy was I wrong. Linux works so well on the laptop now that I would have bought the lowest version of windows and spend the least amount of money on it(since I couldn't get my model without an OS).

2.) Depends on what you have installed after the clean install. Do you want to put the Thinkvantage tools back on? All of them? Just Vista and the needed drivers takes about 15 to 20 GB of harddrive space alone. Don't know what the Thinkvantage tools take.

Hi all, this is my first post and I stumbled on this site after trying to install XP on my system properly.

    it didn't work.

I have a T400 that had Vista installed. Because I still have a student license for XP, i used this to install XP Pro SP3. Everything was fine but the WLAN can't connect. After I read the clean install guide and gave it a second try with your help, the problem remained.

Microsoft Wireless Network Connection can find my network, and i can punch in the Network Key. It tries to connect but fails at Acquiring Network Address. It then falls back to Automatic.

I have installed intel PROSet/Wireless WiFi Connection Utility and it tells me that my drivers aren't installed. But I followed the install guide and the Device Manager says everything is functioning.

Unfortunately, the wired connection doesn't work either, which baffles me.

Basically I have no clue what else I can try. If one of you guys could suggest anything, I would be so greatful.

Great install guide. I took the plunge this weekend and am really glad I did. I never quite realized, even with a stripped down Lenovo stock install, just how much gunk was completely unnecessary on my system!

Hi, I just purchased a Lenovo U330 and there are absolutely no disks included with the computer. However, I do have reinstallation disks for Vista from a previous Dell computer. Can I use these to do a clean install on my new Lenovo, and if not where can I find a Vista disk I can use?

    Thanks in advance.

Thanks, orev. I am used to receiving 10-15 disks with my laptops, but this package from Lenovo was absolutely minimalist. The truth is I always throw them in a bin and forget about them, but now I need one or two, so I am glad I kept them. Thanks for the guide, too, by the way.

Just did a clean install of Vista Ultimate (should have select Business, but now got Ultimate).

    1) infinst_autol.exe (Chipset driver)
    2) iata87enu.exe (Matrix Storage Manager)
    3) 7zku53ww.exe (Power Management Driver)
    4) ...

Now I need to do Video Driver next. Question... which would be less bloatware (spelling?) :

    7ad530ww.exe 17MB (Intel Video Driver for GM965)
    7kd546ww.exe 63MB (Lenovo Quadro NVS 140M Driver)

My guess is the 63MB is memory hogger, right? I am using my laptop for business, no games (no need for equalizers, etc). I am seeing that "Total Available Graphics Memory" is 14MB (it's 128MB hardware). Just want to enjoy surfing and DX from websites.

I didn't realize the screen native is 1680x1050. I would have to use 120 DPI. What you guys use for this kind of 15.4"?

    Thank you.

I would never consider a video driver bloatware since it is necessary for the functioning of the computer's video hardware.

Now a trial version of AOL... that's bloatware!

BTW, you need to install the above video driver based on the hardware of your particular laptop. If it has a discrete Nvidia graphics card then use 7kd546ww.exe other wise use the Intel drivers.

Well, I undestand. You know, a video driver is little thing to enable the video potential. A little equalizer would be a necessities (such as adjust AA, OpenGL, etc). But those shouldn't need to be add up to 63MB!? 20MB would sound reasonable. Anyway, most games even add those things in their games, overwriting the video's settings. I could be all wrong, I am not expert in video techine.

Ha, yes. Starting way back when they first came out, pure bloat.

Interesting... I hold off install any more drivers until I read a reply (almost a day). While the waiting, I connect to internet and update just Vista junk... proof, I got the video's driver worth:

Generic PnP Monitor on Quadro NVS 140M
1680x1050 (I had to use 120 DPI, looks good now)

    Total Available Graphic Memory: 887MB
    Dedicated Video Memory: 128MB
    System Video Memory: 0MB
    Shared System Memory: 759MB

PLENTY for business use (web design, etc).

    Thank you.

Hi, I've used this clean install method once before and it worked like a charm. However, when I attempt it again using the Anytime Upgrade DVD, I get a message (after step 6) saying that there is a missing cd/dvd driver and to insert a disc or USB drive with the missing driver. Has anyone gotten this message, and know a way around it? I've even put the existing CD/DVD drive driver onto a USB key, but the install process cannot continue.

    Thanks,

Just to be clear, if I order a ThinkPad with Vista Ultimate - and I assume that means 32-bit - I will be able to install and "pre-activate" Vista Ultimate 64-bit? Is that because I would technically be licensed simply for Vista Ultimate, which would cover both 32- *and* 64-bit versions?

Also, my preference would be for the system restore process to install the 64-bit version. Is there any way to make that happen?

Yes, If you buy 32 Vista you can go to 64 bit for free and vice versa. The only thing is that if you have 32 Vista and want to go to 64 bit, you need a 64 bit disc of Vista.

You would have to create a new partition on the drive with an image of your new 64 bit system. I am not sure how to do this exactly since I have never had the need. There are programs that I know of like Acronis(sp?) and Norton ghost that can do these kinds of things.

Ok, so there's no way to change the Lenovo recovery partition to 64-bit, if it didn't come that way then. That's kind of what I figured, but with some of the other stuff I've seen people come up with ways to accomplish, I thought it was worth asking. :)

I don't know of(or have heard of) a way to do that. The partition is just a base image that Lenovo puts on the harddrive. It is from this partition that recovery discs are made(holds copy of partition).

I have heard of people doing the following:

    1.) A clean install
2.) Deleting the hidden partition on the disc that Lenovo put
3.) Taking an image of the partition with the clean install
4.) Putting this new image on the disc in it own partition that they use as a recovery/hidden partition.

Yeah, I tend to use Acronis True Image to do just that. I was just wondering if there was a way to produce an image of the preferred OS (in this case 64-bit) within that hidden partition that the ThinkVantage tools could be used to recover.

    Hey all,
I couldn't find any information on this. When I clean install my new laptop, what drivers/software should I install for the WWAN card? It's a Ericsson F3507g None US WWAN (not AAPT, Vodafone, or Cingular afaik).

    Thanks

For those wanting but unable to get their blue ThinkVantage button working in Windows after a clean install, installing the ThinkVantage Productivity Center Pack worked for me. I found a post in the Lenovo forums where it was suggested by one of the mods, but it isn't listed in the T/W500 driver matrix. Luckly they linked it. After trying and trying with nothing working, this finally did the trick.

Is there any reason I can't or shouldn't follow this clean install guide for the T400 I just purchased?

Does Windows just not sell unlicensed Vista installation discs anymore?

What is the best way to get an installation disc so I can perform a clean install?

A retail disc(borrowed from a friend), an OEM disc or a Anytime upgrade disc will work just fine. They don't make the Anytime upgrade disc anymore, but there are a few people who sell them. Take a look at ebay. There are a few on there once in a while.

Got it. Someone else advised me to try a torrent but I don't like the idea of that.

One last question about this. Is the T400 switchable graphics a thinkvantage feature that I'll need, or can Vista do the same thing with the same convenience?

    Thanks.m

Honestly I am not sure. My T61p doesn't have switchable graphics. But I think there are other machines made by other manufacturers that have switchable graphics and are not using the Thinkvantage apps, so I don't think you need the Thinkvantage apps for it.

My advice would be to do the clean install and see if the switchable graphics work. If it doesn't then look into the Thinkvantage app that might help you.
