Well, I'm going to be getting a T400 today. However now I am at a standstill. Is there really any point in getting coverage? The price is rather... pricey... and I can't help but think about Thinkpad reputation. Tough built laptops that will stay with you for awhile. As long as I don't do stupid moves like stick it in a bag with books or drink anything around it, would I need any sort of coverage in the end game?

Even though it's a Thinkpad and I own a Thinkpad T41p, one of the better engineered ones, at least the consensus suggests. It was second-hand and it still had around a year of it's original 3-year warranty left. However I tried to play a game on it and it wouldn't boot anymore afterwards. No output on the screen nothing. It was a complete motherboard failure due to overheating I imagine, as even though the game was modest it can stress many systems including desktops which have more space for ventilation and cooling. Without that 3-year warranty I would have wasted my money.
One of the best features of a Thinkpad in my opinion is it's warranty, and a 3-year one at that. I know they don't do that as standard anymore, but it's a feature that I will always pay extra for. On site as well, saves the hassle and you can see what they're doing, don't have to fear losing your HDD data or anything either. -
It is pretty much pot luck; you can always buy the most reliable product, but nothing is perfect and stuff happens. And if it happens to you, you will be very happy with your coverage.
Extended my Dell warranty 11 months in for 3 years and it paid for itself when my fan didnt turn on and a/c adapter replacements.

I had ordered a T400 and got it this Monday. I ordered it with addition 3 yr Onsite Service warranty. But on the lenovo warranty page

when i check up my system it still says expiration date as 2009-09-05, which is 1 year from the shipping date.
I called Lenovo and they said that it would take around 3 weeks for the warranty to be updated. Is this normal? or is the warranty updated immediately?
Also, is the additional warranty in addition to the standard 1 year? making the total coverage period as 4 year or is it total of 3 year only.

it would be 3 years and not 4 years. With regards to the delay i read around this forum and people are saying you would have to wait a week or two... so it seems like the lenovo rep. was correct. But of course check every week and call them every week to be on the safe side.

Many credit card issuers give you an additional year of warranty if you match their criteria. I know mine does,

Yea.. i used my Amex CC for the additional warranty. Also, when I had bought my older laptop Dell E1505, i had purchsed the additional warranty when I received a discounted offer sometime later in the mail. That offer actually added 3 + 1 year to my laptop, which I could verify on the Dell website. Did not know that the Lenovo program is only 3 yrs but not 3+1.. bummer..
