I am wondering:
Is it possible to order a heavily customized machine from Lenovo? For example, let's say I want to exclude an OS or hard drive from my order, to reduce the amount I spend - Is that possible?
-
Yes, call them to get a custom order if there are options not on the website

Depending on the number of PC you are buying, I don't think the price tag would be much difference anyway, because it cost them very little to get the license from Microsoft. I doubt they will exclude the OS if you are only buying a less than a couple hundred to a thousand.
-
No, you can order a single model with Linux and save a decent amount (<$100) for a single model.
-
Tsunade_Hime such bacon. wow
Do you have to call in order to get no OS option? I distinctly remember mistakenly allowing a no OS option on x120e making it 100 dollars cheaper..
-
At the moment, yes (at least in the US -- I have no idea about other countries' stores.)
-
Okay, thanks everyone.
When the hypothetical T430S is released, I'll be trading in my T420 (which I got for a hefty discount last summer and can probably sell at a small gain) for it.
I already have a ton of Windows 7 licenses lying around, and I already have an Intel SSD. So, yeah, no need for an OS or hard drive. -
They may or may not do it. If they somehow do agree to sell you one without an HDD, you can trust that it won't be at a price advantageous to you. Buy it with the HDD and either use the HDD in an UltraBay secondary HDD setup, or get a ~$10 enclosure and use it as an external backup drive.
-
Oh well...
If that's the case, then I should just sell the hard drive I get, then. -

I always keep the supplied HDD as backup and can slot it in if there is a support issue where they want me to reinstall Windows. The original HDD then also goes back in when it's time to re-home the machine.

Yeah, I don't think that getting it without an HD will help. But a FreeDOS preload and no Windows license might. It's not without precedent either, as there have been a number of CTO-able machines offered that way in the past.

This is just what I want to know when buying again with big OEM. I have access to MS OS hence no need to have it put in the purchase. Hope I can get like at least 50$ off when I get the S430
-
There's been limited success with that in the past. Sure, they may cut you a check for some $50 or so, but not willingly. Expect to spend hours upon hours wrangling with customer support and getting escalated/transferred from one manager to another.
-
That's the case for a Windows refund.
That's not what I was referring to. -
I agree, definitely worth it to save the drive. Especially if you ever sell the unit in the future. Saves you from worrying about any data going with the laptop when it's sold as the drive is the original and fresh.

Well, my sister's ancient Portege is starting to die, and she wants an X130e as a replacement. Is it worth calling them to see if they will exclude the Windows license for a $50 discount? I'll replace the hard drive with an SSD and sell it.
-
Doesn't hurt to ask, but you'll want to have a reason for the discount. $50 seems a bit arbitrary, if you ask me. In any case, don't hold your breath.
-
Of course, I won't ask for $50 off, I'll start by asking them whether they can exclude the license (and how much it might knock off the price).
Custom orders from Lenovo.
