From what I can find online, it seems that the Yoga 730 thermal throttles around the 70 degree mark. Is there any way around this? That temperature is far from being too hot, and performance really suffers because of the throttling

Have you tried undervolting it and repasting to get temps under control? Sadly I'm not sure about circumventing the temp limits.

Even with those measures, as soon as it hits 70 degrees clock speeds dive to 1.8GHZ or so. It is probably something on the EC, any idea how to get around that? -

With the XPS you can just uninstall the dell thermal drivers to get around temp limits. I don't know if that would work on the yoga though?

TBH I am not sure if it is EC or some software thing. I'll do some more digging and see what I can find -

It could very well be a firmware (EC) thing. Your best bet is to force the fans to run @ 100% speed when gaming or stressing the system. This is the only way to keep the temps below 70C. You could also elevate the back of the machine and/or put it on a coolerpad. 70C is ridiculously low for a throttle threshold, but I've seen even worse, some vendors go as low as 65C! -

There are really only 2 solutions. If it is software based, disable the software. If it is EC, cry about it online and then try and get those temps as low as possible. Probably liquid metal with cranked fans.
It sucks that an otherwise brilliant machine gets crippled like what Dell does -

Most of them do get crippled be vendors outside of a handful of highest quality gaming and power machines out there.
Check my E485 thread. Same thing is happening to AMD Ryzen chips across the board. It's all politics and cutting corners on cooling solutions. Good news is, some things can get unlocked. So there's hope. -

You mean like all manufacturers do right? I do find it funny even though the vast majority of manufacturers do it, Dell is the one that gets the bad rap...toughasnails likes this. -

I’m not sure for others, but I only have experience with the XPS 15 personally, so I can’t really speak for other devices. -
Did you try throttle stop? "Disable and lock turbo power limits" fix the issue for me
Does anybody have the Yoga 730 and know how to get around thermal limits?
