so I got my t61p and was wondering if the latest build of W7 is good enough to be used as my primary OS? I find it a pain to select which OS to boot up so was hoping that W7 is good enough to install permanently on my laptop? Thanks.

I'm using it as my sole OS and not afraid of anything.

While not really Lenovo-related, I use the official beta as my primary OS, but wouldnt recommend it for this purpose just yet. While it is very stable for a beta, there are still some issues with it. My biggest one right now is how unstable this version of IE8 is, but if you use another browser instead, you can get around this. However, you will also find driver and system level software lacking in several areas.
Cheers. -
I've been running it on my T61p since the first beta (7000) and just installed 7068 this morning...I think it's great. I've had more problems with XP and Vista.

yeah I understand it necessarily lenovo related but wants to hear from other thinkpad users. Thanks for the reponses guys.

I wouldn't dual boot W7 with any OS you want to keep healthy just yet.
It hasn't even been released.
It's still experimental.
Wait till it is finished.
MS is going to allow downgrades to XP. -
I have 7 x64 (build 7057) on my X200s as my primary OS. It's much better than Vista and I was up and running perfectly after the initial install (barely any driver installs needed). Let me know if you have any questions.
I've also installed it on an older X61s without issues and my friend's SL300 with only minor trackpoint scrolling and lenovo power manager issues. -
And a "downgrade" it will be. XP is old technology and does far less.

Another option for the OP is to dual or multi boot and then set the boot menu's to default to either Windows 7 or XP or whichever the other OS is. When I first installed Windows 7 build 7057, it was my primary OS for about a couple of weeks or more. I had both a Grub menu and Easy BCD (name?) menu. Both are able to be modified to have a default OS and boot into it within the time you set. For example, mine is set to boot into Windows within 15 seconds (during Grub where choice is Windows or Ubuntu) and then into XP within 15 seconds (during Easy BCD menu where choice is between XP and W7). I believe the 15 seconds can be reduced all the way to 1 second eliminating any need to choose an OS at boot time. On the negative side, it did take me a few days to get those boot menus working just right. I had to use a Super Grub menu and download the Easy BCD software. But I didn't mind that since I learned more about both boot options. I think there's a way to use one menu instead of two in my case, but I'm satisfied for now.

yea i was curious on how to cut down on the time to choose which OS to use. I guess the default on mine is 30 seconds. I'll google and learn how to change those times.
-
If you download Easy BCD, then it will let change the times. See attached screenshot. Choose the Change Settings button on the left and then select your default OS and change the bootloader timeout. Just make sure you click the correct Save Settings button as there's two on that window (as seen in screenshot). When I first started changing these settings, I was trying to work too fast and didn't realize there were two separate save settings buttons. I'd make the change, click the wrong save button and the change wouldn't occur and I'd be puzzled.
By the way, I used the Easy BCD in Windows 7. I think it's boot menu overrides all others or doesn't play nice with other menus like Grub. So if you download it, I think it might be best to do it in W7, not XP.Attached Files:
