That touch pad looks huge, but might just be the perspective.
-
Multi-touch perhaps?
-
Any online retailers taking orders for 14/15's yet?
-
I hope they consider using the i5-520UM or hopefully the better i7-620UM/i7-640UM, or even the i7-620LM/i7-640LM.
And a SSD option would be nice, and hopefully Intel 6300n 3x3 streams.
..... but I'm glad they're gonna release a version of this laptop with the new i5 cores, I'll probably still get this if it only has the i5-520M, Intel 6200n, and a 7200rpm HDD just because it looks like the most comfortable keyboard to type on. -
The edge series does support multi-touch touchpad, I hope the 13" edge have i7 or at least a i3, but it only a culv.

I actually would love to buy the T410s or the X201s if only the screens were 720p or 900p, and with better reviews of quality. I wouldn't even mind using the older style Thinkpad keyboard, but I seriously want that new lenovo chicklet keyboard, the thing looks like the best chicklet keyboard ever made for a laptop. I'm not too sure about that gigantic touchpad though.
In fact the X201s with the i7-640LM would be the perfect choice for me, for what I need in a laptop..... if it only had a nice LED 720p screen, all the other options that I want are available for the X201s (price is a bit much though).
I also wish that they would refresh the 13" Thinkpad Edge with the newer CULV i5/i7 processors, or even i7-640LM. It's the perfect size for me to travel with, I don't want the optical drive that might come in the 14" Edge, all I want out of an ultraportable is a nice SSD with trim, 3x3 or at least 2x2 Intel 6300n/6200n wifi, the newer i7 CULV with turbo boost, Intel GMA HD graphics, a 720p screen with good color and brightness (900p would be better), and hopefully good Linux compatibility. The speakers should be decent but not a necessity since I can always use ear phones.
So far nobody is making this laptop yet. The X201s comes real close, but every review so far has complained about the screen and the 1280x800 or 1440x900 is not what I want (watching HD movies in the letterbox on a 12" inch screen is something I'm not interested in).
I did see an article about the HP dv4 refresh having specs close to this, but it's not out yet..... and after owning 2 HPs I feel like I want to try a different company. -
So if I understand you correctly, your only problem with X201s is that the screen resolution is too high for your liking? -
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wide_XGA
I guess the 1366x768 is only approximately 16:9 rather than a square perfect 16:9 like 1280×720 is. my bad. -
And so it begins
16:9, gloss, plastics, and chiclets are the wave of the future -
Just to explain things a bit more..... what I need from my next computer is battery time for travel, enough processor power to build my OS from source (FreeBSD/Gentoo/Sabayon/Arch/Slackware.....etc), a powerful processor to patch and compile my own custom kernels or to build PGO version of firefox, maybe use handbrake some for converting some VIDEO_TS.VOB files, definitely a strong dual band/triple band wifi since I plan on only mostly free wireless for a while, and for entertainment purposes I like to watch a lot of 720p or 1080p movies that I own on an external drive.
So I'm basically a Linux hobbiest, and since I plan on traveling a lot in the near future I will want to watch some nice blueray rips that I have, so having enough battery power to get through a movie and enjoy it on a full screen will be important to me.
I also type a lot since I use the command line as much as I can, so a nice keyboard is necessary. I currently use Xmonad which is basically all key-commands (it's a tiling window manager with nice compositing).
And my last quality needed is durability. I need a computer that can be backpacked with (like spending months at a time living out of a backpack or long distant car travel). That's another reason I have been looking at lenovo. -
And I think the interior of the Edge is matte, not glossy? Hopefully, they retain the option to get a matte black lid, instead of the glossy black/red lids. The silver-colored side panels still look bizarre to me though. In that sense, I like the X100e a lot more.
Undoubtedly, though, 16:9 displays are here to stay. -
I had hoped that the refresh of the Y460 would have been what I was looking for in an ultraportable but I don't like the specs of it, I also hear it has heat issues, and it doesn't look as durable as the Thinpad Edge..... which to me, looks like it could be backpaked with through Europe and not get damaged. (like camping with, youth hostels, riding the euro rail, and possibly even biking through some countries)
And as for the chicklets thing, I have heard nothing but positive reviews for the Thinkpad Edge keyboard. Most people say it has the exact same solid feel as the regular Thinkpad keyboard and maybe even better. As for other companies that use the chicklet keyboards..... none of them have the same look as the lenovo one. None of them have that wide curve of each individual key, and none of them are spill resistant like the Edge's. My hands feel cramped when typing on my crappy HP and I just look at the Edge keyboard and know it'll be nice to use..... and from the lenovos that I have typed on, I know that they feel great, so if the people that reviewed the Edge keyboard agree that the regular Thinkpad keyboards are the best available and that these are just as good and maybe even better, then this is the chicklet keyboard that I want.
I'm not interested in the Apple/Sony/HP dm3t/MSI/Asus style keyboards. They're all flat and don't look like they would have a good feel for someone that types a lot. I'll settle for any of those brands as long as the rest of the specs are perfect, but again, only the Sony Z (too expensive) or the HP dm3t look like they will travel well. Maybe the new Asus UL30vt refreshs that will come out soon. -

I personally like the silver-colored side panels and it's look. -
It's hard to know how durable the Edge's are, no one on this forum seems to have an Edge 13. The lack of user reviews is surprising.
This video shows someone who already scratched the glossy lid in the short time he had the thing for review, if that says anything. -
The Lenovo service and support website has video of it taking apart and putting back together.

That might give you an idea of its construction and it's build quality. -
-
XTW and maybe R are the only true thinkpad that is still out there. SL Edge and the X100e are just sheep in wolf skin.
-
i use a t400s, and have tried both the edge 13 and the x100e, and as far as i'm concerned, the keyboards are good enough for me to be considered thinkpad keyboards.

Thinkpad Edge 14 and 15 are up on Lenovo Australia website.
http://shopap.lenovo.com/SEUILibrar...-category-id=CCAA98F81F1149E1BC701E0BB6728667 -
They're up on the American site as well.
-
ThinkPad Edge 14 is very tempting for $650, I wonder when will review of this unit be up.
-
Yeah. If other news articles covering the 14/15s are right, it'll have a discrete graphics option.
Too bad the weight's just shy of 5lbs! Too heavy for my ultraportable needs!! -
Hopefully it offer a ATI 5650 or at least a 5470.

Models oriented for the SMBs. But most important, a sleek design.

Thanks to zeth006 for finding this review of a Edge 15:

I kinda wish they would of just called these Ideapads. The R series are the budget Thinkpad line, what's the point of having both the SL and Edge series.
They look slick though. The SL series look like regular thinkpads, but didn't have the durability. At least now they look good.
The review of the Edge 15 looks like it has a matte screen, maybe there'll be options for it in the future. -
Risky move for the Thinkpad name if they don't hold up well.
Bad press on the name Thinkpad can trickle down, in this case up to the real thinkpads -
Any idea on when the Thinkpad 14 and 15 will be offered with discrete graphics? The website says that the laptops have discrete graphics options but they aren't selling any with it right now.
-
I was hoping for a much better 14" Thinkpad Edge than the ones they have available. Why not use the new CULV i7-640UM or at least the i7-640LM?
I guess I can hope that they refresh the 13" Edge and keep it CULV. -

would you say these are suitable for home use / school use? Or are they purely buisness made stuff. Also does anyone know when the red colour and further customizing will be available in australia?
-
These are the middle ground between the two. If only they make it thinner.

All pretty glowing reviews .... Now, all I need is for Lenovo to let me CUSTOMIZE one of these bad boys. -
-
I want to a detail video of the edge 14. I hope with the customize one will allow you to upgrade the processor and screen.
backlit keyboard, i5, matte lid, hd+ screen. Then it will be perfect.
