I just bought a T400 that is still being shipped to me.
I configured the machine with 2 GB PC3-8500 DDR3 SDRAM 1067 MHz DODIMM Memory (1 DIMM).
I wanted to add some RAM and order it now so that I have it by the time my T400 arrives.
Is there anything special I need to know before I order my RAM? I was thinking of ordering 2 more GB.
The T400 definitely has an extra slot for the RAM, correct? Is there one or two extra slots?
I just buy the same type of RAM the computer is configured with, open up the bottom of the laptop, and plug it in, correct?
Any help/thoughts are appreciated.

Also, what is so special about Newegg? Is it reasonable to just go to Best Buy?
-
The T400 has two slots of RAM. One of them is used to house the 2GB single DIMM, so you just need to buy one more and install it in.
NewEgg is just a cheaper alternative to Best Buy. If you want instant gratification of having the RAM, then you can go to Best Buy. However, the price can be 50% or more, without taking in account shipping cost if buying from NewEgg. -
It isn't newegg, it is the internet in general. Price your computer products online and you will notice the drastic difference in price compared to a B&M store. Not to mention selection.
-
why don't you google beatmyprice i like that and used it to buy oodls of stuff
-
I like instant gratification.
Thanks for the responses. -
Why do you need instant gratification if you don't have the laptop yet? Just order it online now and save some money.
-
So looking at Newegg, I see tons of different brands...
Does it even matter what I choose? -
Yes. It'll make a difference in the satisfaction you achieve with the final product which in this case is a computer.
-
Then go with Best Buy
There's nothing wrong with that, except maybe that since you don't have your computer yet, I don't see how you get instant gratification with the RAM

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148192 There made it easy for you.

LoL. Memory brand typically doesn't matter as long as the company is fairly well known and has lifetime warranty. Just go for the cheapest that meets these requirements.
-
Just don't buy generic RAM. Always buy a well-known name brand with a lifetime warranty. I have always had good luck with Crucial.
-
Since your probably not familiar with memory brands, pretty much all the ones are safe. (Kingston, Crucial, OCZ, Corsair, G.Skill, PQI, Mushkin). You can glance at the product rating on newegg and tell pretty fast if its a safe buy.
-
Wait until you have your computer, sometimes errors occur when memories are installed that are from different manufacturers, that's why there are Dual channel kits.
-
That is the exact same 2GB module I bought from Newegg. That Crucial stick works perfectly fine in my T400. The price is pretty good (for DDR3) too.
I have had good experiences with Corsair and OCZ as well with my other computers. -
How big of a problem is this?
Because I was just getting ready to order that Crucial RAM for cheap. -
Just get it. Other users have responded and said the compatibility is fine. Normally it is not an issue and if it is it is wide spread and heavily reported. For instance the new macs have issues with a lot of ddr3. And a gskill kit had issues in the x200/s/t/ but is suppose to have been corrected.

It's been gotten.
