I've had an x200s since they came out and picked up an x201s last week. I really like the x201s but have noticed the fan is noisier than on my x200s. This is really the only gripe I have about the machine.

Even at the lowest fan setting, I can hear a slight "whir" sound, where on the older machine all you could hear was the air moving. The x201s seems to need the fan running at fan speed 1 almost all times, otherwise it ends up heating up slowly (reaching 55-60C CPU temps within 20 min). By default, this is what the BIOS controls enforce.

It's not horrible but not completely quiet like the x200s was under no load. I'm actually wondering if my fan is potentially bad or if other x201s owners are having the same experience?

The SL9600 or if you've got the SU9400 run at 17w and 10w respectively while the i7 runs at 25w. The i7s runs hotter which is why the fan is probably more active on the X201s.

That makes a lot of sense, thanks for answering. I won't worry about it then. :)

My x200s had an SU9400, so yeah, huge difference in power draw.

Ya, but everything is on die for the new chips too so we have to think about that. Hard to guess though.

Oh man, thats wrong :D The only thing that makes me cautious about new x series is exactly the noise, after reading all those reviews about how silent and unnoticeable are x200 series I feel kinda put off by reading that new refreshed x201 is quite louder :/ Not sure if boost in graphics and cpu department will make it up for me so i might ending buying X200 series instead, because i need it to be ultimately quiet machine.

Is that the consensus? I would say wait until more users here have machines until really judging.

I think the main difference is that the x200s can run with the fan off for extended periods of time, where the x201s needs to run it at low speed to cool off.

It's not loud by any sense of the imagination, I am just particular. The only way you can even hear it is if you're in an absolutely quiet room. I'm an absolute freak when it comes to noise and can say that it's not really an issue.

My x200's fan usually runs on the lowest setting. You can't hear it unless it is over 1k rpm or there abouts.

The lowest setting (level 1) on the x201s is 3k rpm. If the lowest on the x200s is 1k, then it's impressive how quiet it is given 3x the rotation speed.

Sorry lowest is about 1800rpm. The audible "medium" speed is about 3500rpm.

Just checked with my fan control.

Theres a lot of interest, if the palm rest of the x201 will fit on the old x200 and give the touchpad feature to the older model. Maybe you could try this, maybe with ultranav driver of the x201.

Even if it fits you still need to connect it to the motherboard.

yes, thats also what i meant with "fit". the connector requires to fit on the mainboard.

No, its not consensus, but review unit seemed to be louder as well, at least judging by the way it was described, so im eager to see what others have to say when they stress their X201.

+1 about the palmrest, curious :)
