Thinking of getting an IdeaPad Y550 (with 130M GT) as a moderate gaming/college computer; but seeing as how it's relatively new, curious what your guys' experiences with the laptop were?

More specifically, has heat and simple power been a problem?

The most demanding games I'm planning for are Starcraft II and Diablo III (possibly Sims 4)... Thanks in advance.

I got the model with the 2.53 core2duo and have been running Fallout 3 on medium-high with no problem what so ever, so your games should run just fine.

I bought it for the same purpose as you need it for and I'd highly recommend it. It has handled everything I've thrown at it with no problems what so ever. There are no heat issues unless you doing processor intensive activities i.e. games, and as long as you have it on a solid surface, such as a desk, it shouldn't be a problem.

The battery life is fairly good. I'm able to get three hours on a charge if I'm web browsing.

The only thing I want to complain is, the screen lid

While I was typing, the screen lid tend to a little bit Vibration

    Anyone has similar issue?

This is the best value computer in the market.

For only $600, you can get a fair computer with everything in high quality. Good speed, nice desgin, great keyboard, fair battery life, awesome speaker.

Not so much when I'm typing, but my left hinge does squeak when I move the screen back and forth.

How'd you get it for $600?

I have the model with T6500, 4GB DDR3, 320GB HD, NVIDIA GT 130M, and just like you OP, I needed a very multipurpose laptop. From the three days that I've had this baby, it seems to have fit the bill for what I needed. It's fast enough to replace my main desktop, and I can play all the games I did on my older desktop just as well.

Build quality in my opinion is okay. The wide selection of ports such as HDMI, eSata/USB combo, VGA, 8-in-1 card reader, etc, are very handy. The DVD drive seems a lot sturdier compared to the one I had in my previous Acer. The display bezel isn't quite as secure as it probably should be, and the touchpad buttons seem a little bit lacking in quality. The screen ratio is 16:9, although I am more used to 16:10. The hinge is okay, although I worry about the quality of it. Speakers are decent for a laptop, nothing to really complain about. The volume control buttons to the right of the keyboard is really handy, and the OneKey Recovery will definitely be handy to those that tend to mess up their systems a lot. One thing I really hate is the placement of the function key where the control button should be on the left side of the keyboard. Besides that, everything else is quite good, and I am certainly enjoying my purchase.

And to answer your question, heat shouldn't be a problem. My Y550 has never heated up to the point it was uncomfortable, and even when the fan is on, it's not that noticeable. My GT 130M with 186.82 FW also sits around 50-55 idle, and hits around 70 load, so the temperatures are quite good.
