Well I got my new T400 yesterday, and frankly I'm a bit disappointed.

    Equipped as such:

    P8600
    3470HD/Intel 4500 switchable graphics
    Vista 64 Business
    3gb
    320gb Hitachi HD 5400 rpm
    14.1" 1440x900 LED screen
    CDRW/DVD-read drive
    AT&T WWAN (need verizon).
    Fingerprint reader
    no memory card reader
    6-cell battery
    bluetooth

No build quality issues, but it came from the IBM outlet store on ebay.

It was advertised as a 3670HD video card, I was told by email TWICE that it had a card reader and a DVD-write drive.

I went through the ibm updater and got the newest softwares on it, cleaned up the registry to have a good start.

Seems that I'm seeing the Vista hourglass thingy QUITE OFTEN when I run anything and I'm just sitting waiting on it. Seems really old-dog slow.

    I am coming from a Toshiba U405-2833 (p8100).

Vendor is offering $140 discount for incorrect equipment, but if they give me that, I'll lose the $90 MS cashback.

They have offered a couple other systems in trade, but you know how it goes with lenovo prebuilts, no card reader here, no LED screen there, faster hard disc here, no FP reader there... I did know it came with the AT&T instead of verizon which I would rather have had, but darned configs are all over the map with them.

To replace the DVD drive with a writer would be at minimum 150, express card reader would be another 30, and the video isn't the biggest deal.

What would you do? The vendor at least is offering to fix it to their best, but wondering if I should just bail and take the offer of an emailed UPS return label and go elsewhere.

Yes it was an early Xmas present.

Well the slow downs are probably due to a fresh vista install. Give it a few days to optimize, my system was slow the first few days as well. The DVD drive is user swappable, check the vendor to see if they are willing to send the drive and you send back the one that came with the computer.

It is really up to you on how much you want to return the computer. Gaining 50 dollars versus not having the computer for a 1-3 weeks is really dependant on you.

I briefly touched on it with them yesterday, but of course no one who could start things actually moving will be in until Monday. I did ask if they issued a credit, would it be from the original transaction and was told yes. Well that would kill my MS Cashback..

The drive I might be able to get them to do, but darnit I really need that memory card reader. I'll hold some patience for the vista install, thanks for the encouragement :)
