Hi,
I have had dell notebooks for the last 6 years and I always got extended warranty. If something broke, I would call them and they would ship a new one for me. For example a hard drive once. I also had a problem with my screen and they sent someone to fix it on my house.
How is the warranty & service with Lenovo? Should I get extended warranty?
I am considering getting a t61
Thanks

they ship you a whole new laptop?
i thought it would just be like a refurbished one?
well idk, but around here people rave about the warranty -
No, if something breaks, they would ship that one part.
Example: hard drive, power adaptor, battery
if it's something that need to be looked at, they come to you and fix -
Sorry, don't mean to hijack the thread but I also had a question about the warranty.
If I order my Thinkpad with just the Base 1 year warranty, can I upgrade and extend that warranty at any time during that one year? -
i read that you can only buy warranty in the first 30 days
-
You can purchase warranty upgrades within the original warranty period, though they date back to the original purcahse date. So if you buy a laptop on December 31 2007 and 6 months later buy a 4 year NBD on-site warranty upgrade your warranty will expire on December 30 2011. You can only purchase accidental damage protection within the first 30 days.

Well a few things here. Lenovo has different types of warranties based on how much you pay. If you have depot warranty, then if there is a problem you send out the machine to Lenovo, in a box they give you. They fix the problem and ship you back the machine. If you don't like this kind of warranty service and want someone to come to your home, then you will need to buy the onsite warranty, where they send a technician to your home if there is a problem.
There are a few parts that if they go wrong, they will send to you for replacement. These parts are designated as Field Replaceable Units(FRU). -
wow onsite is awesome

ITYM CRU (Customer Replaceable Units).

what if i wanted to upgrade my depot to onsite?

Yeah CRUs are a big help. I got the keyboard replaced on my X41. Very easy.
-
What type of things will void my warranty? For example, does replacing the HDD or RAM void it?
-
No.
(filler, filler) -
Replacing your CPU will void your warranty, but ram, hard drive, and keyboard won't void it. If you are unsure if something will void your warranty you could always contact Lenovo first before doing anything to double check.

Just a word on coverage of peripherals- I called in to exchange a mogo mouse I bought with my computer less than two months ago. After being transferred twice and being hung up on, and calling back and being transferred again I was told that they have a 21 day limit on all returns... I usually shop at Newegg which has a one year return for exchange policy. I love my computer but would really caution someone from buying direct from lenovo.

Nonny, yes you are right. I thought FRU and CRU was the same thing. What is the difference then? -
KUNFUCHOPSTICKS Notebook Consultant
FRU is Field replaceable unit. The guy that comes to your house is capable of replacing these. CRU is replaceable by customer.
Really, with the hardware maintenance manual IBM provides, if you are willing, anyone can easily service FRUs also. Most other notebook manufactures don't provide hardware manuals. -

Ah, yes. Thanks. -
For the Customer Replacement unit, do you have to send the defective part back to Lenovo? If so, do Lenovo pay for the shipping charges?
-
it will come with a return shipping label. If you do not return the item, you will be charged.
