Ideally I'd like to wait till summer to get details on the X1 before placing any order, but ZaZ and others have mentioned that IPS displays have been in short supply in the past. How many months were IPS panels available before? More recently we've seen a similar thing happen with the X201s so perhaps X220 may not be immune.

Tsunade_Hime such bacon. wow
I mean nobody can predict the future...lol. If we had known about the bad Nvidia chips I'm sure everyone nobody would have bought them. IPS is an option very few people would in actuality would buy, though it is nice it is being offered again. Their stock levels would not be significantly high I would imagine.
-
We can try to predict the future based on history. These exotic panels tend to not last past summer, figured maybe a birdie might know something about the situation this time around.
-
I hope to god it doesn't run out.... Getting one this summer.
-
How much money do you have to spend? The X1 isn't going to be cheap so depending on your budget the question of whether to wait might be moot.
-
with the amount of IPS panels Apple uses for iPads, I bet soon enough they are going to become more common in other applications.
I think we can thank Apple for re-introducing the technology on portable devices. From now on they are only going to get cheaper. -
I'm willing to pay up to MBA prices, but since the X1 is going to be an Ideapad I think I'm just going to go for the X220. As others have said the IPS panel kinda seals it.
-
Where on earth has this X1 been announced?
-
Lenovo X1 is also a mobile phone ... http://www.ubergizmo.com/2009/03/lenovo-x1-heads-for-china/
-
The roadmap below is one of the first times it came to light. And Erik has verified it's existence as well.
Some details here:

-
It hasn't been announced. The specs and features are under NDA.
-
You have some information to share? I'm not sure why you think it's an Ideapad.
-
If it's not an Ideapad I'd sure like to find out before ordering a X220, although I now consider the X220 to be a near holy grail product.
-
i love how the X1 has gone from a thinkpad to an ideapad to a phone and no one knows exactly which one it is. all they know is what it's called. and, X220 IPS panels are somehow already in short supply yet not one of you has placed an order or had your paws on one.
all the speculation is entertaining. everyone makes wild guesses then second-guesses themselves. it's great.
perhaps this forum needs a rule against wild guesses and speculation. the individual anxiety levels would certainly be lower around here as a result.
-
I would definitely get a X220 with IPS screen, but only when its price has been low enough. An used machine, maybe
-
While history can be an indicator of the future, but only in hindsight. Take it as it comes. That's about all you can do. Hopefully, Lenovo has their act together.
-
I have a feeling they will have more than enough supply this time. I'm still gonna get mine early on. Hopefully a coupon comes out when the x220 is released.
-
Come on Erik I never said the X1 would be a phone
, just that Lenovo had a model called X1 before and
that was a phone. Thinkpads.com says the X1 will be an Ideapad; thought they were a reliable source for related news, maybe not.
The good screens have been scarce in the past, IPS, 12" WXGA+, Superbright and Outdoor tablet. It'd be a pity to miss IPS in the X220 knowing what we know has happened before. -
I wonder (or rather hope) that the T and W series also have the IPS displays as an option on their models.
-
+1 though i don't find it that entertaining anymore. the whole "sky is falling" type posts regarding the x220 is starting to get repetitively annoying. i can probably guess that the next series of threads will be about how soon will they put out a coupon out for it.
if you're interested in getting a x220, ante up and buy one when they're ready to take orders.
i guess this being a public forum, you have to take the good with the bad. -
Why don't you get a head start and create one.
-
the answer to that is "no one knows" and "just wait and see".
-
We can have a thread dedicated to you when the first X220 coupon lands.
