I have had a T42 Thinkpad for some time. I just purchased 3 R40's Thinkpads they are a few years old but have never been used. They have the antena (2) for wifi and the same slot my T42 has so I put the card out of my T42 and it will not load . Tells me I have a unauthorized card in the slot and to shut down and remove it. If I install an external card in the PCMICA slot it workd great. I thought the T42"s 2200b/g card might be the problem so I purchased one, the was made for the R40, 2100b. Both are Intel wifi cards. Unit is an IBM R40 ,1.8GH ,pentium centrino m, runing Windows XP Pro.
Thanks for any suggestions. Tom

are you sure it is the Pentium Centrino M 1.8 ghz? because R40's highest Pentium M cpu was 1.6 ghz. There was however the Pentium 4M 1.8 ghz, since it used the T30 motherboard in some model.
If it is Pentium 4 CPU model it would explain why the T42 wireless don't work.
Also what the R40 model number? i.e. xxxx-xxx
In addition, did the 2100b wireless card work? -
Your right that is my T42 It is a 1.8 Gh celeron, 2681 cto R40. My T42 is the centrino m 1.73GH. The 2100 card gave the same message.

I found a windows based program at this web page MEGAUPLOAD - It turns off the 1802 message on a Ibm and other laptops. This allows you to use wifi cards that they have not listed in the bios as acceptable. Simple and works great. Thanks for you help
