Has anyone done this before? Just to see how tough these things really are. I'm really tempted to try it on my T40.![]()

Why.The.Hell.Would.You.Do.That???
-
Oh I don't know. When I see this kind of video ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=taTbJi3Yhto), I get an urge to see how durable these things really are.
-
It may withstand pressure, but that may be pushing it a bit. Though, depending on where you stand, it shouldn't be a problem, but as Ice-Tea mentioned, uhhhh, is there a valid reason?
-

I really would not recommend that..
Thinkpads are not all that tough.
T4x has the well known problem in which it gets fried when people pick it up by one of the edges (due to the base flexing).
If it cant survive its won weiht, can it suvive yours ?? -
wearetheborg Notebook Virtuoso
I believe the R61 has an a metal rollcage. T4x has no such thing. -
I have a T41. I pick it up by one edge all the time, both open and closed. I also stepped on it a few times (not full weight, just stepped on). I've dropped it a few times too.
The only time I've had to send it in for repair is when my friend spilled bubble tea all over it... and later when I discovered they gave me a bad system board. -
I thought the T4x has a metal rollcage on the body and not the screen.
-
the video doesnt work anymore =/
-
No.
This has been another edition of Simple Answers to Simple Questions. -
No. Metal rollcages were only introduced in the Z61 and T60 series. Before that, all ThinkPads were constructed of magnesium.
-
wearetheborg Notebook Virtuoso
Magnesium or plastic ? -
I said what I said.
-
Yeeesh! How do you treat your stuff???
-
I'll stand on my gateway when my thinkpad gets here. But that's because it's a piece of crap and I wouldn't care if it broke. I've stepped on it a few times in the dark by accident though. Hard enough once to flip it over.
-
sort of off topic but...i got really mad one day and and threw my video ipod and cell phone against a brick wall.
Do I regret that action?....YES, yes i do. -
dont stand on it. you will be on top and just like in war, you have an unfair altitude advantage.
instead of standing on top of it, try hitting your head with it!! and see which is stronger... -
I have stepped on a T41 getting out of bed. Forgot I placed it on the floor beside my bad. I felt some significant flex but it works perfectly fine, and it still looks great..no breaks, cracks, or bents. Pretty impressive.

ipods are rubbish anyway.

i just stood on my x61T ( since its going to the depot anyway and I have the accidental protection) and nothing happened. It seems that the corner areas of the computer are better protected than the center areas. But nothing happened except a little flexing in the middle.
-
I've walked on my ThinkPad (as in all my weight on one foot on top of said T61).
It's still perfect. -
And how heavy are u ?
Just kidding, the thinkpad with the mental rollcage on the top is very impressive. it's one of the reason why Thinkpad is on top of my list -

I think my D630 could pass that test. If it passes the test what do I win? If the answer is nothing, why would I risk breaking my laptop for nothing?
EDIT: On the other hand, if you offered me $1,000 if it passes, I would test it by standing on it. I might even jump on it for $1,000 if it passes. -
Hehe, if you were so sure it would pass, then you wouldn't be asking for money to buy a new one when you smash it.
Do it for free, record a video, then you can brag with...well ... broken Latitude... -
Homer_Jay_Thompson blathering blatherskite
It has already been done. (Technically it is a D620, but the D630 has a similar case) Do I still get paid?
http://www.dell.com/html/us/products/latitude/test.html -
That wasn't a D620.
-
I can't think of company, whick offers business-class notebooks, and doesn't have similar videos.
Bottom line: Don't try this at home. -
Panasonic Toughbooks?

I am sorry, that is a D810.
http://www.dell.com/content/topics/global.aspx/solutions/en/roadready_test?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs
If a D810 can pass these tests, I think a Thinkpad could too. -
Didn't I say "business-class notebooks"...
-
Homer_Jay_Thompson blathering blatherskite
Rugged class notebooks are different. The D620 ATG is similar to a semi rugged Toughbook. Panasonic and Rugged Notebook are the only companies I know of that make fully rugged notebooks.

I'm sorry, they're rugged notebooks. They're still badass nonetheless.
-
2 lbs, obviously

any computer with a metal lid will be able to pass this test. I just stood on top of one of my old el cheapo notebooks I bought new for 300 dolllars and it passed the test. IT has a metal cover. Any modern day laptop should be able to take this kind of pressure without any damage occuring.
-
You forgot about GammaTech and Itronix.
-
That toughbook is incredible....And rugged notebook is the same too.
Can Thinkpads with the new mental rollcage on the top can pass those tests.?
-
Homer_Jay_Thompson blathering blatherskite
Not even close. -
Might aswell be carrying around bricks
-
what do you mean ? Thinkpad ?
I think thinkpad can pass some of those tests. The airbag inside should protect the hard drive pretty well....
-
Homer_Jay_Thompson blathering blatherskite
It can pass some of the tests, but not the extreme ones like sand. In other words, a Thinkpad could not survive a sand storm. -
Really
I never tried my thinkpad in the sand...
But I think if it could survive in water, sand wouldn't matter, would it ? -
question: i have been looking into getting a vostro 1400, but with lenovo's prices right now i would so much rather have a r61 series thinkpad for about the same price and with vista home premium instead of vista business (i actually had an R30 way back in the day and i loved it)
to those who have thinkpads with the rollcage design - do you think the accidental protection is a necessity? i will be bringing it to college with me and hopefully will be using it at least 2-4 years. thank you for your help. -
The roll cage might protect it from falls but it won't protect it from water damage. It's up to you if you think the $90 is worth it or not. Personally I didn't get the ThinkPad protection because I'm pretty careful with my electronics.
-
thank you for the fast reply! i too am very careful with my electronics. the only thing i've ever physically broken was the screen of my ipod (which wouldn't have happened if the darn thing wasn't so slippery!) i think i'm not gonna get the accident protection. thank you again!
-
depend on ppl's weight........
1'm only 55 kg
might be fine
my friend is 100 kg
then it's a totally different story -
I'm curious at how much weight they use when they stress test them at their labs. The test that they apply pressure to the top of the machine.
I would think they would test them at around 200lbs, it might be the max but it should be able to handle that much. It'll be kinda embarrassing if the word got around that someone stepped on their mighty Thinkpad and broke it. The reputation would go down hill and give other business notebooks an edge.
I wonder what the actual max weight should be, to bad the people that do that kind of testing aren't on these forums. -
wearetheborg Notebook Virtuoso
The T42 lids seem so bendy, I dont know how they would survive someone standing on top.
Unless the pressure was at the edges.
Is anyone confident enough to stand on top of their ThinkPad?
