I am ordering T400 in few days
is it better to go with default 2GB from lenovo + 2GB from newegg which saves me 60$

OR go with 2+2GB from lenovo
Thanks

Yes.
Did that myself. Works just fine. -
Newegg is cheaper and will work fine (as long as you buy DDR3). The only downside of buying from Newegg is you would need to seek warranty action on the RAM from the manufacturer and not Lenovo (your other stick and the rest of the system would still be covered).

That's the case with any aftermarket upgrade though.

Crucial's warranty process is incredibly straightforward; I've used it before. So I'd have no worries about that, in the event you need it.
Kingston is also really good that way, should you need a second choice. -

I agree with the others. Go aftermarket and save some money. I did and it works fine.

Some of Lenovo's upgrade prices are REALLY overpriced IMO. You can save quite a bit of money by doing your own upgrades.

i think you will find that both Kingston and Corsair ram have a lifetime warranty, so you should be covered fine. Just a matter of putting it in - follow instructions in your service and troubleshooting guide.

Both brands are pretty good when it comes to warranty and quality of their ram.Last edited by a moderator: May 7, 2015

Thanks u all for ur suggestions

If you buy say 4 gb of ram from lenovo when you build your laptop its like a $120+ option. If you buy 4 gb's from newegg its about $60. you would probably save something like 50+ so buy it at newegg

I can never find the RAM search tool on newegg. Anyone have the link?
Does anyone prefer crucial.com over newegg? -
- Computer hardware - select memory from the drop down.
- Laptop memory.
- DDR3 1066
- Cas Latency 7
I prefer whatever is cheaper. Aside from that, I see no difference. -
there's more than one way to go about this. you can either get the minimum amount of ram, then buy as much ram from newegg as you think you need, or you can buy enough ram from lenovo so that you have enough for a while, then upgrade later. i got enough ram to last me for at least a few years. by the time i do need to upgrade, hopefully prices will have dropped a lot for this type of ram. where you draw the line is up to you; it depends on your needs

I think the best option right now is to upgrade from 2GB (2x1GB) to 2GB (1x2GB) from Lenovo. It's only like $9 and then you only have to buy 1 more 2GB when you want to have 4GB.
-
ah, yes, you are right about getting 1x2GB instead of 2x1GB. if you get 1x2GB you won't have to throw away a stick of ram when you actually do the upgrade. in fact, i think you would have to throw away both sticks to get 4 GB since you only have 2 slots (correct me if i'm wrong). i have heard the t400 can take up to 8 GB (not sure if this is true), but i don't think i plan on having this much (even a single 4 GB stick right now would be extremely expensive).

I agree with jon, but make sure to look for a brand with a lifetime warranty(not hard to find, most have them).
