I am having a problem with my T500. Last week Firefox froze and I had to use the task manager to close out. The strange thing was that even after I shut down Firefox, I could not clear the Firefox cache using CCleaner. CCleaner kept skipping this step as it does when Firefox is running. So I decided to reboot.

Rebooting did not work. After entering my password at the Windows 7 login screen the boot got to the point where the quick launch icons came on the screen and then froze. I wound up inserting my Windows 7 disk and did a repair. That seemed to work but didn't.

Now when I reboot I get about a one out of four chance that the machine will boot successfully. Otherwise it gets stuck somewhere int boot process displaying either a blank task bar or quick icons.

I have run a full virus scan using AVG and full scans using Spybot S&D and Maleware Bytes. All come back clean.

Does anyone know what might be wrong with my machine? Am I about to have a catastrophic failure or do I have a virus or malware that is not being picked up?

ATI switchable model? Try it on integrated CPU in the bios.

Try a Linux disc just to rule out a Windows issue. Maybe run a diagnostic on the hard drive and memory or different ones if you can.

I would run the Lenovo PC Doctor diagnostics on it, make sure it isn't a hardware issue (sounds like a hardware issue), using a Linux live disc like ZaZ stated above will rule out hardware vs software.

Sounds to me like it's probably a software/OS problem, so I would definitely try a Linux Live CD and see if the sporadic freezing/failing to boot still occurs.

In hindsight I think the problem may have been caused in part by the use of a registry cleaner. I have removed it from my machine and I haven't had the problem since...keeping my fingers crossed.

An application that identifies, and can remove, old or erroneous registry entries which might slow booot-time or cause other issues. Some of these cleaners can be liberal in their identification and cause problems by removing legitimate and necessary entries unless tweaked. CCleaner is one of the apps with this function.

If he doesn't already have that, it will be difficult for him to obtain it now.

If registry cleaners were needed, wouldn't windows have included this yet? Usually they will trash the registry if they find something out of the norm.

I would def do a memory diagnostic as well as a HDD one, i'm sure your T500 has the HDD test in the bios.
