My X61s is nearing one month old. I've noticed the paint on the corners are starting to rub off. Do other ThinkPad owners experience this cosmetic problem too?

Do you use a laptop bag or sleeve of any kind? I'm assuming they use the same paint on all the ThinkPads though.

I've had this problem on the past few T series machines. I use a slide-in type case which does rub off the coating on the corners of the screen. Strange enough I've never had this issue with any of the other notebooks I've owned.

Could someone post a picture of the damage that a sleeve might cause? I am thinking about buying a sleeve, but if it is going to ruin the finish on my notebook I might not. Also, for those who have had this problem, how much rubbing do you notice when you put in the sleeve, i.e. how tightly does the sleeve rub against the computer as you put it in?

    Thanks.

The paint is rubbed off on the very tips of the corners of the lid of my T61. Area rubbed off is about half the radius of a pencil eraser. My sleeve is not tight at all, so putting it in my book bag I can imagine that I would have plenty of movement to rub off the finish.

The corner of mine is slightly rubbing off, the end that usually goes in first when I put it in my bag.

Lenovo needs to do something about this, it seems like its a common problem.

T60 here, had it since May and yes, somewhat irritatedly the soft-touch paint on at least two corners of the lid has rubbed off.

I think this happening on ThinkPads mostly just goes to show that most of us really use our laptops, mine is in and out of a modestly padded backpack several times a day just about every day; so this doesn't surprise me all that much with how I use it. :)

Lenovo needs to address this issue. Perhaps use a more durable paint.

Damn. This is bad news. I'd no idea this could ever happen to a TP.

And, I'd always assumed a sleeve (either tight or loose) would prevent such calamities.

Not that I'm compulsive or anything, but I may have to start using bubble wrap on mine - just to be on the safe side.

I believe there was an old ThinkPad that had a different material on the top. Maybe they should go back to that? :- )

The problem here is that when you put on the sleeve and take it off the paint rubs off simple friction. It also happens when you put it in your bag and it moves around and when you take it out it occurs. I have a T60p and for a few months it was fine after I bought a laptop bag and started using the bag that is when the paint started peeling. On my laptop it is right on the corner it is not even visible unless you look. A black Sharpie should suffice. But for those who have large lacerations like my friends, 600 on the palm rest, Lenovo should sell the paint or atleast let people know what it is.

I think if your laptop is under warranty, luckily mine has a 3yr, you should be able to get a new bezel if it's that bad. Also the material on the to cover of the TP is different from the rest of the unit that is why the paint rubs of. The cover I believe is metallic and when you paint metal it is bound to scratch or peel if you have a car you know. Also heat affects the paint I'd guess leaving a TP al day in the sun would cause the paint finish to dry, fade and begin to crack eventually peeling.

you can use small pieces of elect. tape to tape the corners and put a long strip along the top if you know what you're doing it will not be noticeable and it really works. "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure"

What kind of tape? elect? link to whatever you're talking about.

I really can't think of any tape on the corners that wouldn't show up, either that or it'll make me worried about peeling off more if I took the tape off. Small pieces of scotch tape might work but I'm not sure if it'll show.

Lenovo really needs to use better paint, I bought a Thinkpad, not something that'll look like some crappy black inspiron if I don't want rubbed off corners.

I really hope Lenovo trolls these forums, they need to get the word threw their heads.
