My X61s was barely 1 month old and the paint on the corners were beginning to rub off. I haven't dropped the laptop or anything. I'm not sure if this is normal or not.

    I'm using this:
    http://booqbags.com/s.nl/it.A/id.100/.f?sc=2&category=1090

The inner material is cotton I think. It shouldn't be rubbing the paint off, unless Lenovo is using very cheap paint. The fit is pretty snug with an 8 cell battery though. It could putting the laptop in and pulling it out of the bag causing the paint to rub off.

I already contacted Lenovo about this and they promised to replace the top cover under warranty. However, I'm at school right now and can't be without a laptop. I'll get the cover replaced over Christmas break though. I was a little surprised Lenovo covered cosmetic wear.
Are there any bags/sleeves you recommend?

I have very slight wear on the top corners on the cover of my T60.

See my very crummy camera phone pictures. I wish I had a macro mode :(

    I don't know, man.

I guess earlier or later, the paint at the corner will be gone.

    It's still black...

I don't think its worth the hassle to replace the cover. But it's just me.

After looking closely at my T61 the paint is starting to slightly wear away on one side. I've been taking my T61 school twice or more a week so I've also had it in a bag a lot.

I'm kinda disappointed about this, a new Thinkpad shouldn't be showing wear like this.

Do they (Lenovo) sell the black paint I kind of want to paint mine black or maybe take the whole thing apart and spray paint it red or something. A red thinkpad would look nice.

No, I don't own a sleeve. When the laptop has to leave my desk (rarely does so :D ), I put it inside of an old T-shirt that has the head and arm holes sewn shut. Seems to keep it from getting beat up. I then put it in a backpack and off to class I go!

i know this isn't the same issue, but i just wanted to mention that specks of the "titanium" lid of my z61t are coming off....

BUT, i think it's my own fault because it's only in the area where the velcro strap of my SF Bags (i was too cheap ((or too wise?)) to buy the fold over flap) comes in contact with my laptop. And I wouldn't seal the velcro tightly, leaving a strip of it loose to chafe against my laptop.

everytime i see it, though, i get sad. -=(

Oh it's not Lenovo. I had a T40 for almost four years and the finish also wore off at the corners. I did put it in and out of a bag every day so that contributes to the problem, but it is what it is: a coating on top. Subject it to enough wear and every day use and the weakest points (the corners) are going to wear.

All paint rubs off. Mine did on my t40p to a point that I stripped the finish off and clear coated it. On the t40 series its a cast magnisium alloy lid. Before clear coating, left mine out in the air and it slowly started to turn whiteish.

USE FOLLOWING ADVISE AT OWN RISK!!!!
Acetone on a clean terry cloth towel. Slowly work around on your rubs/scratches. Allow to dry before you do too much too fast. That should get rid of some of the shiny spots <should>.

I've got a 4 year old T41. After looking at this thread I checked the corners and noticed that there is some wear at the corners. However, I think given the black undercoating, that it really isn't all that noticeable.

My T40 showed similar issues at the corners on the top of the screen. I had it 5 years and it never got much worse than the pictures in this thread. The inside of mine was black all the way through so it looked fine (just a little bit of a different sheen). Compare this to some crappy Motorola cell phones and remote controls I have owned that were just a thin coat of black/silver paint on a white body, the wear on my T40 was not really a problem.

Same here with my new T400 and less than a month of use. It screams poor design/materials, but hasn’t bothered me much yet.

Mine too and it's not causing any problem.

I'm more concerned with the right hinge that's a little loose on my T61

I prefer paint-less corners above paint coming off all over the laptop like other brands have.

I also have a pretty bad chip on the cover (goes down to the metal). It's very small and I have no idea how that happened. My T60 took a beaten for 2.5 years and the outer layer still looks better than the T400

I actually think it is the topcoat that gives the lid of Thinkpads that rubbery texture that is rubbing off. Most of the plastic/metal that is used in Thinkpads is dye-cast all the way through and thus doesn't have the problem some cheap electronics have of showing a white background when the silver paint chips off. Even after my corners rubbed off they sill looked the body of the Thinkpad, they just didn't look like the rest of the lid.

The clear coating on my Z61m's titanium lid seems to be rubbing off the front corner -- largely because of the way I take it off the bag. I think Lenovo added the matte clear coating on the metal lid to avoid finger print and scratch marks -- unfortunately, Titanium doesn't seem to hold any kind of paint that well (ie The chipping Tibook of Apple). Luckily though, Titanium also doesn't discolor that easily so when the chipping gets worse, I can just use a wet cloth to apply mild abrasion on the remaining patches of clear coating to reveal the naked titanium lid. Then, I'll have to worry about scratches.
