I'm interested in buying a T400. I understand they added an LED option for the displays. I recently purchased a T61p and had to return it to lenovo because the screen (samsung) was completely washed out and not very bright.

Have they fixed this on the t400?

Also, every Core 2 Duo laptop i've used has an unbearable whine. Lenovo reduced this by allowing a bios setting disabling the deepest sleep state of the processor, but under certain scenarios, I could still hear it.

Does anyone know if this new chipset in the t400's also have the high pitched whine issue?

The t400 screen is 200 nits, and I do think that is brighter than the T61 screen. I think the thinkpads for some reason use poor screens. Strange, b/c it's like they go out and find the worst screens possible b/c that's been my observation thus far. Screens are sourced from all the same factories in China for most notebooks these days, so to me it doesn't seem like an Apple screen would be better than a Sony screen vs a Dell screen even though you'd think they would be. They are all using similar suppliers. Actually for the LED screens, I am not aware of any 1440x900 LED screens so far, so I don't know of any to compare with. But history isn't on your side.

The T61 screens I've seen are no better or worse than anything else available. WXGA+ LED screens are being offered on the T400 right now as is the WXGA+ on the MacBook Pro. LEDs have better battery life, more even lighting and are generally brighter, but do not offer better PQ.

I think both Dell XPS and the Macbook Pro have options/use LED 1440x900 screens.
