    Hello,

Do Thinkpads (T and R400s) come with HDMI ports? When purchasing from the Lenovo website it does not mention external ports and retailers really do not mention anything either.

What other ports are standard on these Thinkpads?

    Thanks.

I was able to come across this in a Thinkpad R400 from PC Connection:

    Expansion slots:
    (1) ExpressCard
    (1) PC Card

    I/O:
    (1) RJ-45 LAN
    (1) RJ-11 modem
    (3) USB 2.0
    (2) Audio (headphone, microphone)
    (1) HDDB15 VGA out
    (1) IEEE 1394 FireWire
    (1) Docking connector
    (1) DC power in

Does this mean that Thinkpads, at least R400, will not have the HDMI port?

Apparently, they don't. But the Lenovo website can be misleading: for example, they still say the maximum RAM in T400 is 4GB, when in fact it is 8GB.

If the Lenovos indeed do not have HDMI, consider the Dell Latitude E6400 which has DisplayPort (which can be easily converted to HDMI through an adapter). It's as good as the T400.

The T and R 400 only have VGA. The T, W, and (I think) R 500 have Displayport. If you want HDMI and don't want to use a Displayport adapter, you unfortunately have to buy something from the SL series. Which almost no one on the forum would recommend.

Yeah. Actually, just a while ago I was pondering whether the T400 would have been a better choice than my E6400. Now I know better :D

Lenovo is using DisplayPort right now, though in a conversation I had with a product designer there a month ago they were definitely thinking twice about whether to go with HDMI or DisplayPort in the next generation series of ThinkPads. I would fully expect they go HDMI, that's the way he was leaning.

With simple DP->HDMI and DP->DVI adapters available, is there a reason they should want to go back to HDMI?

I'd be fine with it if they added audio support.

Does HDMI provide audio on these machines?

HDMI is just DVI with encoded audio.

I have read that ThinkPad DisplayPorts do not support audio. However, This is not because of ThinkPad hardware, but the chipset. Whether this is the real root of the problem or not, Lenovo's site that details the T500 only mentions DVI support for Display Port.

EDIT: Yes, MidnightSun's T500 user review confirms that it is indeed an issue with the Monetvina chipsets from Intel.

The SL serie does have in fact HDMI port. Check this out:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lUco_EQH42M

I think SL300 would be my next laptop (At the moment I have thinkpad R32). SL 300 has everythink I need, especially 13"screen, trackpoint and HDMI, but not sure if the graphic card is actually good.

    Cheers

i believe he meant the "thats a true thinkpad" statement.

the SL is not a true thnkpad, unlike the T or R series (or W or X)

The new generation Thinkpad have Displayport with Audio, while the previous generation R500, T500, W500, etc only have video in the displayport and no AUDIO.

only the SL series have HDMI.

Also DP format is free, while the HDMI is not.

Probably not. But you can always test it yourself to confirm.
