Why would anyone do this? You can buy a 1gig stick at newegg for 30 bucks. Upgrading from 512mb while configuring an x61(s) would cost about 200 bucks through lenovo.

    Void warranty? Compatibility issues?

Upgrading RAM yourself will not void warranty and there shouldn't be any compatibility issues if you buy the right model.

There are many reasons behind why people pay Lenovo to upgrade the RAM for them.
    1. They don't know how to do it themselves.
    2. They don't know about Newegg or other online computer stores.
    3. Company pays for the laptop.

Do you know if both slots are easily accessible? I was thinking about upgrading to a single 1gig dimm from lenovo and then putting a 1 gig dimm in myself. However, it would be cheaper to purchase a laptop with a single 512mb dimm, throw the 512mb in the trash, and put two 1 gig dimms from newegg in.

RAM ports are easily accessible. All it should take is removing 2 screws on the bottom.

Lenovo charges $65 to upgrade to a 1GB single DIMM. You can buy 1GB sticks online for about $38. Buy 2 and that's $76.

    Lenovo Price: $65 + $38 = $103 upgrade
    Newegg/ZZF: $38 x 2 = $76 upgrade

Definitely buy the 2 sticks online.

actually what I heard is now all we have are 667 ram. But it doesn't match the new cpu (not fast enough).

They said the 800 ram will come out soon and I think I gotta replace the old 667 ram with the new ones at that time...

not sure about that though. I don't know much on computer science.

    ^^
The Santa Rosa chipset (included in the T61, X61) only supports up to 667 MHz RAM.

You may be confusing it with the speed of the FSB (Front Side Bus) which was increased to 800 MHz for Santa Rosa.
