I was thinking of buying a T61 with Linux installed (it is cheaper) and installing my own copy of Vista (which I already have). Is there any reason I shouldn't do this? Would it void the warranty?

    Thanks,
    Rut

That seems like a fine idea shouldn't be too hard to do. No it will not void your warranty.

I was thinking of doing this too cause they're so flipping cheap right now. I have extra copies of Vista and XP, though I'd probably run Linux mostly. The only thing that causes me concern right now is the screen. It's bit of a lottery as to what you'll get and Lenovo's return policy is so poor right now. While I dislike the dimness of my R60's screen, at least it's evenly lit with minimal leakage. I'm actually looking at a Vostro 1500 too cause I think I'd like a glossy WSXGA+ screen, but ugh it's so heavy, though I don't need much mobility. In the end I'll probably keep what I got cause the I don't think I'll get much of performance upgrade with either as I'm not really a power user, but as always I'm looking.

Would there be any problem obtaining the drivers for Vista from the Lenovo site?

When I bought my Thinkpad the other day the price delta between the model with Windows Business and SUSE Linux was ~$90. That's real savings for those of us with a spare copy or don't like the Windows ecosystem.

Well, I just made the purchase for the t61 14.1" screen. Looks like a good deal? I'll get some more memory elsewhere.
