I just priced out a new T400 with discrete graphics. It comes out to $1,384.05 before tax and after a student discount and a coupon.

    Here are the specs.

    ntel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor P8400 (2.26GHz 1066MHz 3MBL2) 25W1
    Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium12
    14.1 WXGA+ TFT, w/ LED Backlight, Camera
ATI Mobility Radeon 3640 with 256MB
    2 GB PC3-8500 DDR3 SDRAM 1067MHz SODIMM Memory (2 DIMM)8
    320GB Hard Disk Drive, 5400rpm4
DVD Recordable 8x Max Dual Layer, Ultrabay Slim (Serial ATA)5
    Note WLAN10
    6 cell Li-Ion Battery60
    2764: 1 Year Depot Warranty - TopSeller7

Im going to be a freshman in college next year. I figured these specs should suffice for a few years. Are there any suggestions to things i should add or change, and most importantly, would i get this before school starts, which is September 21.

Oh, and will the six cell battery stick out, because if yes, i may as well just get the 9 cell.

i'm wondering why you chose not to go with the 7200rpm hdd.

The 6-cell battery is flush with the system (It does not stick out like the 9-cell does).

i'm going to get a 6 cell as well.
